After the war Davis returned to Georgia and was appointed clerk
of the courts. He married Jane Cook, whom he had met in South
Carolina during the war, in 1783, and the first of their ten
children was born the following year. They remained in Georgia
until about 1797 when they moved to Kentucky, perhaps with a
short period in South Carolina in between.
Shortly after Jefferson's birth, the family left Kentucky for
Louisiana and then Mississippi, settling in Woodville, in
Wilkinson County, where they built Rosemont. Samuel Davis died
while visiting eldest son Joseph in 1824. Jefferson Davis named
his first son after his father.
For more information, see Volume 1 of The Papers of Jefferson
Davis. Much of the correspondence between Davis and his parents
was destroyed by Union troops in 1863.

"CAPT. SAMUEL DAVIS, of Wilkinson Co., Miss., b. circa 1756; d.
4th July, 1824. Raised a Georgia company of volunteers, of which
he was Captain during the American Revolution, and joined the
Continental Army before Savannah, and served during the war in
South Carolina and Georgia. The State of South Carolina issued
him a grant of one thousand acres of land at the close of the
war. He was a Baptist and a Democrat. m. circa 1780, Jane COOK,
of South Carolina, of Scotch-Irish ancestry, and removed to
Green River Co., S. W. Kentucky; then to Bayou Teche, La., and
later to Woodville, Wilkinson Co., Miss."
From Myths Regarding the Genealogy of Jefferson Davis: Samuel
Emory DAVIS, was an only child, therefore he had not siblings.

descendant of David Davis, Jr. uncle of Pres. Jeff Davis.
My Great Great Grandfather, James Davis of Hopkins County,
Kentucky, was a first cousin. My Great, Great, Great
Grandfather, David Davis, Jr., also of Hopkins County, Kentucky
was his uncle, and brother of President Davis' father, Samuel E.
Davis.
There is a bogus lineage in the Lineage Books of the DAR
connecting Isaac DAVIS (1796-1881) as son of Samuel Emory DAVIS
& Jane COOK, parents of Jefferson DAVIS. This Isaac DAVIS is
the son of John DAVIS (1768-1850) & Hannah BILLS (1770-1806); he
is not the Isaac William DAVIS (1792-1833/4) who was son of
Samuel Emory DAVIS & Jane COOK. The above Isaac was born in
Surry Co., NC, and was in Ohio by 1822 — these are places Samuel
Emory DAVIS never lived. Samuel Emory DAVIS was born in Georgia
in 1756, moved to Kentucky by 1797, and was in Mississippi by
1809, where he died in 1824.
Webmaster's Personal Comment
I might add that my own family's long-standing tradition of
being cousins to Jefferson DAVIS has proven not to be true,
though how such a tradition could have arisen is not hard to
understand. From 1797 until 1818, our DAVISes were living near
Fairview in Christian (now Todd) Co., KY, birthplace of
Jefferson DAVIS in 1807/8. Yet despite the proximity in both
time and place, there is no apparent relationship between the
two DAVIS families. My research so far has shown that there
were minimally four different, unrelated DAVIS families living
in Christian/Todd Co., KY, in the first decade of the 1800s.
DAVIS is the sixth most common surname in the United States, so
DAVIS researchers must be very diligent in proving connections
in their family trees, especially connections to famous people.
