Rev. John Marshall Blair was born in Green Co., KY and married
spouse unknown. He also married Sarah "Sally" Young who was born
in1796 In KY. Sarah "Sally" died about 1850 in Adair Co.,KY
Sarah's maiden name may have been Young, but it has not been
proven. He also married Martha Jane Scott who was born 15 May
1820 in KY. Martha Jane died on 5 Nov 1870 in Madison Co.,IA
John Marshall died on 7 Aug 1876 in Madison Co., IA and was
buried in Blair Chapel. John Marshall was a minister in the
United Brethen in Christ church. He was licensed to perform
marriages in Adair Co., KY in 1832. In the early summer of 1860
the Rev. John Marshall led a group of families, (a procession of
nine wagons, one carriage, a dozen yoke of oxen, and several
spans of horses), from Adair Co.,KY to Madison Co.,IA where they
settled. The families in this group came to be known in Madison
County as the "The Kentucky Colony". The party chose Madison
County because John's brother, Alexander, had settled there
after initially settling in Indiana. An article, published in
the Daily Gate City, Keokuk, IA on 28 May 1860, explains the
reason for the move: "they were obliged to leave their homes on
account of their sentiments on the slavery question. Until
within two years past, they had always voted the Democratic
ticket. At the last August election they voted for the
opposition candidates, and since then the feeling against them
has been gradually intensifying, until they found it to hot to
remain there. They could not be allowed the expression of even
the most moderate anti-slavery sentiments (might be true-might
not be true)". According to his great granddaughter, Georgeanna
(Blair) Walker, John had a bad temper and often threw objects at
his grandchildren. John was married three times and he had a
fourth in mind just prior to his death. SOURCES: Annals of
