Msg to Morgan-L mail list: From: [email protected] Date: 22 Jun 2004; Subject: [Morgan] Re: David Morgan

"Warrington Dawson (1878-1962), a descendant of Col. George Morgan, made extensive researches in the history of the Morgan family in Wales. His scheme of the Morgan line from John Morgan of Carlaeon follows, as reproduced by Max Savelle in "George Morgan, Colony Builder," published by Columbia University Press in 1932. [Warrington Dawson's papers, with records of his Morgan family research, are at the Duke University Library, which I hope to visit at the end of July.]

John Morgan of Carlaeon
William, of Llantarnam, m. dr. of Sir.----Marmsett, of Marsam, Kent. (obliterated in the family tree)
George m. Catherine, dr.Wlliam m. Lady Frances of Edw. Presser of Lansore Somerset, Earl dr. of Edw. of Worcester.
Margaret (m. Wm. Stourton) Thomas of Lansore, in Monmouthshire, m. (1) dr. of Walter Griffith
(2) Florence, dr. of Henry Morgan of Pantlaen, Monmouthshire.
Anne Thomas (unmarried)
Charles David Morgan (went to Pennsylvania circa 1720).
Evan Morgan (went to Pennsylvania circa 1720, settled at Philadelphia, died 1748), m. (1724) Joanna Biles, dr. of George Biles and Martha Blackshaw.

Col. George Morgan (born 1743, Phila., died 1810), m. Mary Baynton (1749-1825) of Phila., dr. of John Baynton and Elizabeth Chevalier.

[The following is quoted and paraphrased from "George Morgan, Colony Builder," by Max Savelle.]

David Morgan with his son Evan and at least one other son (Thomas) came to America early in the 18th century, probably about 1717, "but David could not resist the call of the Welsh hills, and returned to his native land, leaving in the fly-leaf of the family prayer-book this legacy:

"I, David Morgan, Gentleman of Wales bequeath to my descendents [sic] in America the comfortable certainty: They came neither from Kings or Nobles but from a long line of true Gentlemen and women with unstained Names."

Evan Morgan, son of David, became a prominent merchant in Philadelphia. He married (in 1724) Joanna Biles, daughter of George Biles and Martha Blackshaw. Her grandfather William Biles came to America in 1679, on the ship "Elizabeth and Sarah," and Randall Blackshaw, father of Martha, came on the ship "Submission" in 1682. The latter held some 1,500 acres of the five thousand acres purchased of William Penn by James Harrison. His father was Captain Randall Blackshaw, of Hollongee, in Cheshire, England, an officer in the army of Charles I during the Great Rebellion."

Evan Morgan died in 1748, at Philadelphia. Joanna Biles died in childbirth, in 1743, at Philadelphia.

Coffinbury (Cleveland, Ohio, in 1932; present location unknown).]

[The following is quoted and paraphrased from "Col. George Morgan, His Family and Times," paper written by Julia Morgan Harding (of Pittsburgh), as published in the Washington (Pa.) Observer, May 21, 1904.]

Col. George Morgan was born in Philadelphia on February 14, 1743, at the residence of his father on the corner of Market and Second Streets. He was the son of Evan Morgan and Joanna Biles, and the grandson of David Morgan, of Wales, who according to a paper written by their descendant, Colonel James B. Morgan, of Pittsburg, emigrated to America about the year 1700."

Ancient inscriptions on an old family Bible prized by the Printers to the University of Cambridge, A.D. 1633, give interesting hints of the early history of the family, among them this, in the handwriting of [Col. Morgan]: "George Morgan, the Son of Evan and Grandson of David Morgan, Gentlemen of Wales whose Ancestors retired to the mountains, rather than be enslaved by William of Normandy called William the Conqueror."

Another inscription refers to his virtuous Quaker ancestry through which he "can trace his family back to the days of Alfred from data that had recently come into his hands." A curious reflection of the "protestant" spirit of an age which even in his day was losing its once necessary fierceness is shown, in another entry in the Colonel's handwriting: "Phoebe Biles, written by her great-grandson over her discolored writing:

"She, as all my ancestors were uncorrupted by Priestcraft or holy water, and therefore I give and bequeath to my youngest grandson, [Gen.] John Morgan, etc., etc., the whole thereof, on the express condition that no holy water or priestcraft shall ever corrupt his mind.

"George Morgan's mother, Joan [sic], was the daughter of George Biles and Martha Blackshaw, and the granddaughter of William Biles and another Joanna, whose surname has not yet been recovered. William Biles was a man of consequences in the colonies, even before the arrival of Penn, for he had large estates in Buck's county, in 1679, and was an original settler on lands bought from Sir Edmund Andros. He was a leader among the Quakers, and was made one of the justices of the Upland Court in 1681, before the arrival of Penn.
"The first known meeting of friends was held at his house just below the Falls of Neshaminy on May 2nd, 1683. During his life he held many official positions.

"Martha Blackshaw Biles, the grandmother of George Morgan, came of another prominent English Quaker family. Her grandfather, Randall Blackshaw, an English gentleman of good birth, whose father and grandfather lost the greater part of their fortune and estates in the cause of Charles the first, came to America with Penn. He was present with Penn at the treaty conducted under the ‘treaty Elm' at Shackamaxon.

"Blackshaw, too, was an ardent Quaker, and the bricks of which the first Quaker meeting house in Pennsylvania were built, were burned on his place. The meeting house was finished in April 1692, and stood on a lot given by William Penn in Falls township, Bucks county, near the Schuykill."

And that, Mr. Redmond, is the best I can suggest about Evan Morgan (son of David Morgan) and his wife, Joanna Biles, who was the granddaughter of Randall Blackshaw.
And damn curious I am as to your connection to Col. George. And believe me, most expectantly, a descendant of the Col., John Alexander Craig

Captain Randall Blackshaw of Hollongee, in Cheshire, England.
Randall Blackshaw born in England, emigrated to America, 1682.

Joanna Biles m. (1724) Evan Morgan (son David Morgan) of Phila.; died in childbirth, February, 1743, at Phila.
