Notes

"Thomas served in the Virginia militia during the French and Indian War, taking part in the Braddock and Forbes expeditions. In 1762 he was a sergeant of the Virginia troops in a campaign against the Cherokees, after having built a fort on the Holston River in 1761. Later, in 1762, he acted as an interpreter and a guide when three Cherokee Chiefs traveled to London, England to meet with King George III.

He went to South Carolina in 1764, obtaining property near Eutaw Springs, S.C., where he opened a store near Nelson's Ferry and was a Justice of the Peace. He eventually settled on a plantation near Stateburg, S.C.

After having been a member of the Provincial Congress and serving as a Captain in the South Carolina Rangers against the Cherokees, during the American Revolution he became a very well known, highly regarded and valued General in the Continental Army, known as the "Gamecock" for his skill and daring in fighting the British in the Carolinas.

After the War he was elected to the South Carolina General Assembly and also served in the Continental Congress. He was an United States Congressman in the House of Representatives from 1789 to 1793 and from 1797 to 1801 and then a member of the United States Senate from 1801 until he resigned in 1810.

It is said that during his many trips from his home in South Carolina to the nation's Capitol he would often visit his mother and sister in Albemarle Co. Va. Following his terms in Congress he retired to his plantation in South Carolina where he struggled with his many increasing debts and bad investments.
He and his wife are both buried on what was once his plantation near Stateburg, South Carolina."
