Wales, by Iwan, ap Dafydd, Page 344.

"Hywel, the poet prince, is a key character in Sharon Penman's
book "Time and Chance" that centres on Henry II and his wife
Eleanor of Aquitaine. But Owain Gwynedd and the land of Gwynedd
feature strongly in the story, though Madoc/Madog is not
mentioned.
The book is the second of a yet to be completed trilogy that
will flow into her wonderful to read "Welsh Trilogy" of "Here Be
Dragons", "Falls the Shadow" and "The Reckoning" that trace the
complex intermarriages and rivalries of the Welsh princes and
the Norman-English kings from the time of Llewelyn Fawr
(Llewelyn the Great) and King John of evil fame through to the
final conquest by Edward I defeating Llewelyn II (Llewelyn the
Last) and Dafydd III in 1282.
These stories are a must read for anyone interested in history,
Wales or just a gripping tale. All her books are meticulously
researched and the lives of those she resurrects call out for
blockbuster movie status in our own time. see
www.sharonkaypenman.com
Hopefully her 3rd book (which will link the two trilogies) in
the "Falls The Shadow", "Time and Chance" trilogy - "The Devil's
Brood" - will refer to Madoc, as "Time and Chance" have left
Gwynedd or Gogledd Cymru (North Wales) in a state of bloody
internecine sibling rivalry...high time to sail away into the
west!"
"Owain ap Gruffudd - Owain Gwynedd, the ruler of Gwynedd from
1137 until his death in 1170 - was the most prominent of the
sons of Gruffudd. He also took advantage of the 'Anarchy',
largely at the expense of the earldom of Chester and kingdom of
Powys. When Henry II came to the throne, Rhuddlan, Ystrad Alun,
Lal and Tegeingl had fallen to Owain, and his realm extended
almost to the walls of Chester. Although Powys lost some of its
northernmost commotes to Gwynedd, the 'Anarchy' gave the ruler
the opportunity to capture the lordship of Oswestry. At the
same time the lordship of Usk became part of the territories of
the descendents of Caradog ap Gruffudd, lords of Caerleon.
The situation changed in 1154 with the accession to the throne
of Henry II, the first English king of the house of Plantagenet.

Penquin Books, 1983, pp. 124 -125)
(note: Owain ap Gruffudd, was the son of Gruffudd ap Cynan, and
the brother of Gwenllian, the wife of Gruffudd ap Rhys ap
Tewdwr)
