Both Alexander N. Rankin; and his wife, Rebecca C. Hand,
Rankin:Rebecca C. (Hand); were born in 1824, according to the
censuses of 1850 and 1860. They were married on 26 Oct 1844 in
Lincoln County and lived in Stoweville, Gaston County where
Alexander was a farmer.
Alexander enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 6 Oct 1861
serving with Company H of the 37th Regiment of the North
Carolina Troops; a company known as the "Gaston Blues." He was
wounded in the head on 27 June 1862 during a campaign at Gaines’
Mill, Virginia and subsequently hospitalized at Richmond,
Virginia. Upon his arrival at Charlotte on 8 July 1862, the
Surgeon,J.B. Alexander, . B.;examined him and wrote that
although "he was shot in the base of the skull," this "did not
prevent (Rankin) from walking about. [He] was examined by a half
dozen surgeons who were unable to trace or locate the bullet,
when Dr. Campbell of the 7th Regiment [NCT] called me to try my
hand...I placed my hand upon his forehead and told him to open
his mouth; at once I saw a swelling in the roof of his mouth; it
was hard and smooth. I made a slit with a scalpel and showed a
minnie ball to the astonished surgeons. How the ball got there
without killing him has always been a mystery." In this way,
Alexander Rankin entered into the annals of medical history.
It would appear, however, that the wound actually did prove
fatal for Alexander died "of wounds" three weeks after his
arrival in Charlotte. His War record indicate that he died on 24
July 1862 but the Family Bible of his sister, Margaret,
indicates that he died on 21 July 1862. It is likely that he
died not so much of the bullet itself, but of the infection
which would surely have followed.
After Alexander’s death, Rebecca resided in Dallas, Gaston
County with her two children both of whom are mentioned in the
will of John Butch Rankin (1874). The known children of
Alexander and Rebecca:
1. William R. Rankin .;— age 3 according to the 1850 census but
evidently died between 18 Aug 1850 and 1860 as he is not present
in his parent’s 1860 household
2. Henry T. Rankin .;— b. Jan 1850 and evidently died between 18
Aug 1850 and 1860
3. Erastus H. Rankin .;— b. 27 May 1859 d. 18 Jan 1916 (further)
4. Sarah Rankin — b. 1862 (further)
