"The following was provided by Horace Hunter, Jr. , third great grandson.Notes on Richard Ellis:Associate Judge of the Supreme Court of Alabama, Moved to Texas, settled on the Red River (later known as Bowie County). Was a close friend of Ben R.Milam, the hero and martyr. Elected Delegate to the Convention at Old Washington, was elected President of the Convention at Old Washington, March 1, 1836, and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.Born in Virginia in 1782 and was educated in the schools and colleges of his native state, graduating in 1804. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1806. After a very successful practice of law in Virginia, in 1814 he was induced to change his residence from Virginia to Alabama, settling in Franklin County. He opened a large plantation, but continued the practice of law. In 1819 he was elected a member of Constitution Convention of Alabama which framed the constitution of Alabama. Alabama was admitted into the Union December 14, 1819. It was formed from a portion of Mississippi Territory and from lands originally ceded to the United States by the states of Georgia and South Carolina, by act of Congress, March 3, 1817. At the first election under this new constitution and after being admitted to the Union, he was selected Judge of the Fourth Circuit Court; under the constitution, circuit judges formed the Supreme Court. He served a full four year term on the court. Shortly thereafter in 1825 he made the overland trip to Texas accompanied by his family and slaves. He purchased a large tract of land and opened up a cotton plantation, his desire then being to retire from public life and to devote his energies to the development of his vast possessions. In 1836 he was elected a delegate to the convention which met at Old Washington and declared Texas Independent of Mexico, and framed a constitution for the Republic of Texas. His reputation had preceded him and when the delegates began to arrive at Old Washington there was an almost unanimous demand for his election as President of the Convention. When the convention assembled he was chosen its presiding officer. Those who served with him in this convention gave him the credit of having made a most excellent record as a presiding officer. When he affixed his name to the Texas Declaration of Independence, he signed as President of the Convention.When a new county was formed from Navarro County in 1849, it was named for Richard Ellis. This tribute was paid to the memory of Richard Ellis by theTexas Legislature, Ellis County was one of the state's greatest and best counties.Mr. Ellis died December 20, 1846 and was buried on his home place. His wife was also buried at the same location. This location had been lost, but in1916 their burial place was located and in 1929 both he and his wife were reburied in the State Cemetery at Austin, Texas.
Was living in Lunenburg Co, VA in 1810 and moved to Franklin County, AL by1820. Was on the Bowie Co, TX tax roles in 1846."
