"He was schooled at home, then attended Capt. James Henry Rice's school, Miss Mattie Chipley's school and George C. Hodges' school. Crayton chose to remain with his grandmother at "Silent Hill" after his mother's marriage to Mr. Moore and finish his education at George C. Hodges' school. In 1882 he competed for a "beneficiary scholarship" at the Citadel and won first place. At the citadel in 1886 he served as salutatorian, and gave an address in Hibernian Hall. Having attended on a beneficiary scholarship he owed the State two years of teaching, and returned to Ninety Six and taught in a one teacher school in Abbeville in the yard of Dr. and Mrs. J.W. Marshall on Magazine Hill. Until he made enough money to buy a suit, he taught in his Citadel uniform (pay was 75.00 yearly). He taught the class all day consisting of 35 boys ranging from little tots to great big boys. Next he taught history and mthematics and served as military commandant at the Greenwood SC Male High School. After his marriage he removed to Sardis, MS, then to Arcadia, Louisiana; to Stuart, Vriginia; to Danville, Virginia, to McEwen, Tennessee; to Augusta, Arkansas. He then accepted a principalship in Blackville, SC and in 1900 moved to Anderson SC to become principal of the Anderson High School, housed in the one school building the town had at that time. The high school had 83 pupils and was on the 2nd floor, whiile all other grades were on the 1st floor (total of 383 pupils). In 1907 he became Anderson's third superintendent of schools, serving as superintendent until 1945, when he retired at the age of eighty. Listed in . Men of Mark in South Carolina, 1909, Who's Who in South Carolina 1921 & 1935; Who's Who in America, Vol XXIII 1944. In addition to many Short Stories published the books to his credit are:
