From "A Baronial Family in Medieval England: The Clares,
1217-1314", Michael Altschul, 1965
Less than a year later, the Despensers themselves returned in
triumph. The king managed to win over to his side many of
Lancaster's allies, and fighting again broke out, culminating in
the royalist victory at Boroughbridge on March 22, 1322.
Lancaster and his chief supporters, including Roger Damory and
Bartholomew de Badlesmere, were executed, while D'Audley and the
Mortimers were imprisoned.
King Edward was at the height of his power. He lavished gifts of
lands forfeited by the rebels on his followers, many of them to
the Despensers, and had the Ordinances of 1311 annulled by the
famous Statute of York. Edward allowed himself to fall
completely under the domination of the Despensers. For the next
four years, they were the real rulers of England .
The ambitions of Hugh Despenser the younger were still
unfulfilled, and he refused to heed the warning of the earlier
warfare and exile. After recovering Glamorgan and Gwynllwg, his
first step was to acquire Usk. In July, 1322, he was granted the
forfeited lordship of Gower, and forced Damory's widow,
Elizabeth de Burgh, to exchange Usk for it." He had thus
reunited the Clare dominions in the march in his own hands,' but
they proved to be only the starting point of his territorial
designs. In 1324, he arranged with the former lord of Gower,
William de Braose, to recover the lordship from Elizabeth by a
fraudulent assize of novel disseisin, When Braose was
successful, he promptly granted Gower to the elder Despenser,
who then gave it to his son . Hugh skillfully exploited his
position as power behind the throne, and by 1325 had also
acquired in one form or another the lordships of Isgenen,
Striguil, Abergavenny, Cilgerran, and Pembroke." With these
additions to the former Clare lordships and Gower.
