HISTORY OF CHARLES COUNTY MARYLAND TERCENTENARY YEAR 1958,
Klapthor and Brown, p 36-37; ...There is no record of the place
or date of Doughty's death. His work in Charles County was
continued by Matthew Hill who established himself in Charles
County in 1669. In a letter back to England at that time Hill
states that the people among whom he has been called to labor
are "a loving and willing people". He says that "under his
lordship's government we enjoy a great deal of liberty and
particularly in matters of religion". He asks for some books and
adds that he will have to wait for any salary until the tobacco
harvest "Which is the only current money in our province". Hill
married Edith, the daughter of Walter Bean or Bayne, and he
obtained grant of an estate which he called
"Popleton" and which is still called by that name. He signed
himself "matthew Hill, Gentleman." Hill encountered trouble with
the growth and strength of Quakers in the Colony and he was
further handicapped by poor health. He died in 1679 leaving
orphan children and considerable estate including a library of
seventy volumes. ...After Hills's death the history of the
Presbyterian Church in Charles County is almost unknown...
