"The Tutt Family of Virginia" Compiled by Augusta B. Fothergill
about 1926 page 21-24
Richard-3 Tutt (Richard-2, Richard-1) was evidently born in
Spotsylvania County where his father took up his residence after
his marriage with Elizabeth Johnson in the year 1731 and
rendered such conspicuous service to that country.
His wife was named Million ? at a most careful search of all of
the available records in King George, Westmoreland, Richmond,
Spotsylvania and other counties failed to reveal her maiden
name. The name Million was quite unusual and only appeared in
the families of Tarpley, Travers, Glasscock, Downmen, and
collateral lines.
They were still living in Hanover Parish in King George County
when on April 25th, 1764, Richard Tutt and Million his wife
conveyed unto William Newton of the same parish and county a
tract of land lying on the head branch of Muddy Creek which is
one sixth part of a tract of 300 acres which was bequested by
Abraham Kenyon deceased ?o William son of John Carter and
recovered by William Newton by ?jectment in King George Court,
which land was the sole property of Elizabeth wife of the said
Abraham Kenyon who claimed it under her mother Margaret daughter
of Simon Yomasin whose will was recorded in Stafford County and
which adjoined William Newton who claims under the same title by
equal dividend.
Richard Tutt, Junr.
Million Tutt
?est Thomas Bronaugh, Willm. Perry, James Tutt, William Newton.
This deed recorded in Deed Book 4, page 530, King George County.
There seems to be no further mention of them in King George
records and none of them in Culpeper County until his will was
recorded on November 18, 1771. It was dated April 18th, 1771. He
bequeathed to his wife Million all of his estate during her
widowhood, she to bring up and educate their children in a
Christian like manner, and in case she marry again she to have
one third of the estate during her natural life.
To son James Tutt all of the land whereon I live lying on the
south side of Muddy Run including the mill and an old field
which lies below the mill on the north side of the said run.
The remainder of the said tract to son Archibald and the rest of
the estate to be divided among four children James, Archibald,
Betty and Richard Tutt.
Executors: wife Million; friends William Newton, Edward Watkins,
William Williams. Witnesses: Mary Tutt, Richard Tutt the
younger, David Darnold. (Will Book B, page 37, Culpeper County)
From two items of record in Culpeper County it seems that
Million was occasionally called Mildred as cited by the
following deed executed by James-3 Tutt son of Richard-2 Tutt of
Spotsylvania and brother of Richard-3 Tutt who died in Culpeper
in the year 1771. This deed was excuted December 7th, 1789, when
the said James Tutt of Spotsylvania conveyed to James Tutt,
Archilbald, Richard and Betty Tutt being children of the said
Richard Tutt deceased, for and in consideration of the some of
300 pounds Sterling, the following negro slaves now in
possession of Mildred Tutt of Culpeper County To wit; Judah,
Charles, James, Adam, Winny, Rose and Sharper.
His claim to a title in them doubtless was because his father
had left them on the plantation in Culpeper County which his son
Richard inherited and the title would have passed on to him, the
said James, ?? heir at law of his father.
The old law of primogeniture was not appealed immediately after
the Revolutionary War so that such deeds were often executed by
heirs at law or eldest sons. This deed also confirms that names
of the children of Richard-3 Tutt whose will was made in the
year 1771, and probated the same year. There is no date of the
death of his wife Million but she survived him at least eighteen
years according to the date and contents of this will.
