From a letter. . ." To; James Roane Esq. Ayletts P.O. King
William Co. Va.
Tree Hill, July 16th 1843
My Dear James'
In a hurried conversation at Montville, I think I understood you
to say that you would like to take one of my mares to breed on
shares at the usual and established rate which can be that if it
is this - I furnish the mare and you to put her to throughbred
horses and bear all expenses and the increase to be equally
divided at 2 ys old. You will in the present have the advantage
of using a mare in foal by the best horse in America (Trustee,
one of Fashion's) for which I shall not charge you. My mares are
equal to any in America for blood se;one of them
out of the mare I purchased from your father by old Fundceon -
the other of a different strain but of unsurpassed blood - you
can take your choice or both as you like. Please let me hear
from you and will, if agreeable to you send over as soon as I
do. -
Nothing would afford me more pleasure than to see you at my
house - with sincere regards and in great haste, your relative
and friend
W. H. Roane
I am overstocked - if you know of any reliable man who would
receive on the above terms the other mare in foal to Trustee
please let me know it but I doubt whether you'd be better off
with one than to take them both. W.H.R.
