  1. +AGNES O'CAHAN

Notes

"The O'Cahans held a large territory called O'Cahan's County in Ulster and claimed descent from Niall of the Nine Hostages, King of Ulster in the 5th century. They were Lords (that is perhaps to say, Celtic chiefs rather than feudal lords) of the Ronte and Princes (again a loose translation of a word for chief, as in the Prince of Coolavin, rather than any formal title) of Limavady before the early 17th-century Plantation of Ulster. [Burke's Peerage, p. 374]"

Notes

"Lawrence Washington b. ca. 1500, d. 19 Feb 1583/84, Sulgrave Manor, Northamptonshire, England, m. (2) Amy Pargiter, d. 6 Oct 1564, (daughter of Robert Partiger). Amy was of Greatworth, England. "Lawrence left Warton, where he was employed by Sir William Parr, uncle of Henry VIII's last Queen, and moved about 1530 to Northamptonshire, where Parr had large interests.

At about this time he married (1) Elizabeth Gough, widow of a rich woolstapler of the town of Northampton. Here he flourished as a wool merchant to become Mayor in 1532. He already acquired land in the county, and leased a house in the village of Sulgrave, when the opportunity fell to him in 1539, at the dissolution of the minor monastic houses, to buy from the Crown for the sum of L32414s 10d. the manor of Sulgrave, which had belonged to the Priory of St. Andrew at Northampton. His first wife died childless shortly after this.

He married another widow, Amy Tomson, daughter of Robert Partiger of Greatworth, a neighboring village. By her he had four sons and seven daughters. We cannot tell whether it was the increased size of his family or ever greater prosperity (he was Mayor of Northampton again in 1545) that induced him to build the house, the remaining parts which are now seen by visitors. The date at which the house was completed can be fixed by architectural evidence at about 1560; he survived until 1584."
