DAR #63798. - "The name of Solomon Carter appears on the roll of
Captain Charles Ellis's Company of Albemarle Co., VA in the
Virginia Militia. The records of Amherst County, Virginia also
show he furnished supplies for the Revolutionary Army."
Miller, John Lyon. THE DESCENDANTS OF CAPT. THOMAS CARTER OF
"BARFORD", LANCASTER COUNTY, VIRGINIA. Harrisonburg, VA: C.J.
Carrier Co. ,1982. Page 227-228. "Solomon Carter [son of Peter,
son of Thos(2) ,son of Thos(1), born Sept. 25, 1739, probably in
King George, died in Amherst, Sept. 28, 1786. In 1767 had a
grant of land in Albemarle near Amherst line, and had other land
in Amherst by deed. In 1783 was head of family of eight and two
servants. Will, probated in 1786, left land and good personal
estate to wife, Mary Anne Bickley Carter, and following
children: A. William, head of family of three in 1783; B.
Abraham, granted 856 acres in Amherst between 1788 and 1822; C.
Milla Davis; D. Peter; E. Sallie; F. Elisha; G. Patty; H. Nancy.
Brother Peter and son Abraham executors. About 1760 Solomon
Carter married Mary Anne Bickley (will of her father, John
Bickley, Amherst, 1793), daughter of John Bickley and his first
wife, Mary Hurt....Of the descendants of Solomon and Mary Anne
Bickely Carter I have no further data, but there are some of
them now in Nelson County, VA."
Copy of will of Solomon Carter, executed 7 Feb 1784, proved 2
Oct 1786, Amherst Co., Will Book e, p. 23. "In the Name of God
Amen. I Solomon Carter Being in Perfect health Desires to
Dispose of my worldly Estate and as followeth Vz.
Item, I give to my son William Carter the Land on which he now
lives and all the Land Joining it on the waters of Buflo also a
Horse one Fether Bead and Cow which he has already Receivd.
Item, I give to my son Abraham Carter a tract of Land on the
water of Buflo on the Tuck Mountain one horse, Feather Bed & One
Cow the horse has bin recd.
Item, I give to my Daugter Milla Davis one fether Bed and a cow
which she has Recd.
Item, I give to my Son Peter Carter halfe the Land where on I
now live to be Equally Dived. betwist him and my son Elisha also
one horse one fether Bed and cow and one Years Schooling to be
paid out of my Est.
Item , I give to my Daughter Salla Carter one fether Bed one Cow
and Riding Saddle.
Item, I give to my son Elisha Carter the halfe of the Land where
on I now life to be Equally Dived. betwixt him and my Son Peter
Carter also one Horse one Fether Bead and one Cow also one Years
Schooling to be Paid out of my Est.
Item, I leave to my Daugter Nancey Carter one Fether Bead and
one Cow.
Item, there is two Negrows Named Jupeter and Chloe it is my
Desire they Should be sold and be Equally Dived. Betwixt my
three youngest Children to Raise and Educate them at the
Discression of my Exrs. Item, the Remainder Part of my Est. both
Rail and Personal it is my Desire to be sold and Equally Dived.
amongst all my children.
Item, I leave to my wife Maryann Carter one shilling to be paid
out of my Est.
Item, whereas my wife has left me and cohabits with another Man
if she should have any Children after this I leave to Each of
them one Shilling to be paid out of my Est.
I do appoint my brother Peter Carter and my son Abraham Carter
my Exrs. of the my Last will and Testament as witness where of I
have hereunto set my hand and seal this 7 Day of Feby. 1784.

"At a Court held for Amherst County the Second day of October
1786 .This Last Will and Testament of Solomon Carter Decd was
presented inCourt by Peter Carter one of the Executors therein
named & proved by the Oath of David Crawford a witness thereto &
continued for further Proff. And At a Court held for the
aforesaid County the Fifth Day of February 1787 This Will was
further proved by the Oath of William Tucker and ordered to be
Recorded and Peter Carter & Abraham Carter the Executors with
WilliamTucker & John Crawford their Security Acknowledged Bond
according to Law and took the Oath Required by Law. Test. Wm.
Loving, Clk."
