The first Thomas that you had on your list has not been proven
to be the father of Captain Thomas Graves. I am sending you some
information from the first two generations of the family of Capt
Thomas Graves. My data is not comprehensive enough to try to
verify persons out in the 5th or 6th generation.
The Graves Family Association is working on a complete genealogy
on Captain Thomas and his extensive family. Publication is not
set yet but it may be a long wait since several other
genealogies are also in the works and are ahead of the one on
Capt Thomas.
FROM GRAVES FAMILY BULLETIN, VOL. 2, NO. 2, MAY 1, 1998
GRAVES FAMILY BULLETIN
The ancestry of Capt. Thomas Graves, the 1608 settler in
Jamestown, VA. His ancestry is given in some submitted LDS
records as son of Thomas Graves and Joan Blagrove,
with Joan shown as daughter of T. Blagrove and Joan Bellame,
etc. The family is shown as from Lambourn (misspelled as
Lamborne), Berkshire, England. I and other researchers have
searched diligently to try to substantiate this, but have never
been able to show that there is any evidence to support it. It
is unsubstantiated rumor, yet it keeps being repeated and
presented as fact. The fact is that we do not know the
parentage and earlier ancestry of Capt. Thomas Graves, but we
have hired researchers to help us find it. We do believe that
Capt. Thomas Graves lived in Dublin, Ireland immediately before
arriving in Virginia, and
that his family was originally from Yorkshire, England.

"My children and the Bates famly came from this Agnes Parsons.
My children came from Agnes Parsons and Samuel Richardson and
the Bates from Agnes Parsons and second husband, Charles
Woodson. I hold a copy of a letter written by Agnes Parsons to
her daughter Caroline Matilda Bates, mother of Edward Bates of
Missouri, "31st 5 month 1778" signed "thy loving mother Agnes
Woodson.
"31st, 5th Month, 1778.
"Dear Cally:
"I have not forgot thee concerning a few fish, knowing thou art
fond of them. i was thinking to send thee a few by the first
opportunity, before i received thy letter. i should be very glad
to come up but i see no way for it at present. i want to see you
all, and little Sally in particular. i will try to forward
Ursula to come as soon as i can conveniently. i have received a
letter from thy sister Sally a few months ago: it was dated
October 16, 1777, informing me of the state of her affairs. She
says she wants for nothing that the country can afford. Likewise
the same day her husband is set out on a six months cruise
against the French. She has two fine children, Jack and Sally.
Sally is 14 months old when she wrote to me. She lives in the
town all winter and goes to the country in the spring and stays
all summer. She says she is determined to come to Virginia the
first opportunity. So I conclude.
"Thy loving Mother,
"AGNES PARSONS WOODSON.
"Thy brother sends ye 2 rock fish, and i send ye 9 shad and a
few herrings."
I have a copy of a letter written by Sarah Woodson Clark from
Greenock, Scotland, to her sister Caroline Matilda Bates, dated
March 22, 1774. These letters were sent (to me) by Judge Barton
Bates and Tarleton Woodson Clark."
