Notes

Executors: Eleanor (wife); William Green; Robert Green; (good friend) Francis Slaughter, gen't. Will signed 22 Feb 1747.

Robert GREEN's uncle, William DUFF, was definitely Irish, since his will (King George County , Virginia WB A-1, pp. 179-82) notes that he had a kinsman John DUFF in Ireland. According to various sources (e.g., HOPEWELL FRIENDS HISTORY 1734-1934, pp. 185-6), William DUFF was closely connected with Robert MCKAY, another Irish Quaker who promoted the migration of Irish Quakers into the valley of Virginia from Maryland and PA. This source also says that Robert GREEN was involved in this project. The same information is in GREENS FROM WESTMORELAND County , Virginia.

Robert was born about 1695 and came to America about 1715 with his uncle William Duff, and ended up owning over 40,000 acres of land when he died. Robert married Elinor Dunn and they had 7 sons, one being named Robert Green who married Patty Ball. Robert Jr. had a brother named John Green born about 1733 in Culpeper County Virginia Both died in Culpeper County. Robert Green came to America in about 1712 with his uncle, Sir William Duff, and they amassed over 400,000 acres of land.

Virginia, Prominent Families,Vol.1-4: "Robert Green, son of William Green, an Englishman, emigrated from Ireland with his uncle, William Duff, a Quaker, to Virginia, and settled in King George County about the year 1710. He was born in 1695. He soon left his uncle and settled in what is now Culpeper County near Brandy Station on the Southern Railway. He built his home near a large spring which is on the road leading from Brandy Station to Rixeyville, and took up large tracts of land in what was, in 1712,Essex: in 1721, spotsylvania; in 1735, Orange, and in 1749, Culpeper. His father was an officer in the body guard of William, Prince of Orange. He died in 1748, his will and inventory of his estate being recorded in the Orange County Clerk's Office. He was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses in 1736, and was one of the first vestrymen of st. Mark's Parish. When a young man he married Eleanor Dunn, of Scotland, and had seven sons."

SOURCE: Susanna Thrornton Gree, Louiswille,KY,June 15,1895 - "Traditions"
says young Robert became fond of the violin, dancing, etc., which the Quaker Uncle did not approve, so Robert left Sir Williams's house, going up the Rappahannock River and locating near the spring (where there were remains of an old house about the year 1730-1735, possibly the place now called Liberty Hall. Mrs. Fanniew RICHARDS GIKERSON, a descendant of Robert GREEN, now owns Liberty Hall, his old home. Nearby is the old family burying ground. She writes, "The last interment was that of General Moses GREEN in 1859. Colonel John GREEN, of the Rev. War, is buried there, as well as several of his family, including Robert GREEN, who died in 1748."

"Robert Green of Culpepper County , VA, son of William Green (William an Englishman who emigrated from Ireland with his uncle William Duff, a Quaker, to Virginia about 1710). Robt. m. Eleanor Dunn of Scotland and had seven sons: William, Robert, Duff, John (our local Col. John Green DAR chapter named after him), Nicholas, James, Moses."

"Robert Green came to America in about 1712 with his mother's brother William Duff, hence the "Duff" name of his son. Robert Green married Eleanor Dunn from Scotland, and the couple had 7 sons, all over 6 feet tall with red hair, thence the name "The Red Greens." Their son Duff Green was married 2 or 3 times, and the second wife was Anne Willis the daughter of Col. Henry Wills and his wife Mildred Washington, an aunt of George Washington. Duff Green died in about 1776 and his 3 youngest sons moved to Kentucky.

The father of Robert Green was William Green who is SUPPOSE to have been born at Green Norton in England, which would mean he descended from Sir Henry Green who purchased Green's Norton and gave it to his son also named Sir Henry Green beheaded 1399. William Green served on the Palace Guard of William of Orange in 1663 and a very detailed description of his uniform has survived these many years. He was married to Eleanor Dunn and was also over 6 feet tall with red hair and was a Gentleman and Yoeman for the King."
Tom Green [email protected]

"I have a copy of the will of Robert Green from Virginia which distributes 2 plantations, a mill and thousands of acres of land in Virginia to his 7 sons, William, Robert, Duff, John, Nichols, James, Moses and provides for his widow Eleanor Green." Harold Green [email protected]

"Robert was the son of William Green, an Englishman. His father was an officer in the bodyguard of William, Prince of Orange. He emigrated from IRE with his uncle William Duff, a Quaker, to King George Co, VA, about 1710. He soon was on his own settling in what is now Culpeper Co, VA, near Brandy Station, near a large spring, on the road to Rixeyville. His large tracts of land were in Essex Co, in 1712, Spotsylvania in 1721, Orange in 1735, and Culpeper in 1749. He was a member of the House of Burgesses in 1736 and was one of the first vestrymen of St. Mark's Parish. As a young man, he married Eleanor Dunn of Scotland who bore him seven sons. He died in 1748 with his will and inventory recorded in Orange Co, VA. (Green, Notes On Culpeper County County, Virginia, p. 61, 1900)."
