Magnolia Gazette, Oct 21, 1965: "Excitement was at a peak in the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Joe C. Purl here when hissister, Mrs.
Mattie Purl Milburn, called from Atlanta, GA., that she was
leaving for a brief visit in the Purl home. Mrs. Milburn
arrived with her son and daughter and what a happy reunion it
was for, especially Mrs. Milburn and Mr. Purl, who were with
each other for the first time in 66 years. Mrs. Purl, of
course, had never seen her sister-in-law, though they had
written each other through the years, and on several occasions
had talked on the phone. As Mrs. Purl said, "I always thought
Mattie was a large woman, and imagine my surprise when I found
her to weigh a mere 85 pounds; as spry as a cricket despite her
78 years; and makes all of her own clothes. Mr. Purl is 75, and
hadn't seen his sister since she left to reside first in
Birmingham, AL, then in Houston, Tex. and in later years in
Atlanta.
After dinner here in the Purl home, the happy group went to
McComb, to visit another brother and sister, Emmett Purl and
Mrs. Victory Myers. There is also another sister, Mrs. Daisey
Purl Spangler, who also resides in Atlanta, and who has not seen
her brother here since 1943. Mrs. Milburn and members of her
family here to go to Houston with a promise of "we'll be back
next year."
