As with many other fellow Virginians, after the Revolution
tobacco became less and less lucrative, partly because of its
demands on the soil but even more because the overseas [London]
market had diminished, so Thomas joined that group of hundreds
who removed to Georgia and settled "up Broad River." On December
3, 1796, he purchased 250 acres of land on Pennington Fork of
Dove's Creek, near the current line between Elbert and Madison
Counties.
Men of Mark in Georgia (p. 524) states: "The first Oglesby of
this line who came to Georgia was Thomas Oglesby. . . ; he was
granted lands in Elbert County for services in the Revolutionary
War, and settled at what is now known as Oglesby, Ga. Here
Thomas Oglesby reared a family of ten children--nine boys and
one girl." Note the discrepancy in total number of children; DAO
shows 12 (9 boys and 3 girls), one of whom never left Virginia
(Salley), so there is still a difference of one child--either
Polly or Mary Lucinda.
From "Official Register of Land Lottery of Georgia, 1827":
48th Day's drawing - May 1, 1827
Elbert [p 149]
Fortunate Drawers: Thomas Oglesby, R.S.
Captains District: Deadwilders
Number: 172
District 6
County: Muscogee County
1830 Georgia census [Elbert Co., p 119] lists Thomas Oglesby as
a head of household, 1 male aged 70-80.
