book Census 1785, Albemarle VA Samuel 4 white 7 buildings
'Revolutionary Soldiers in Kentucky' compiled by Anderson
Chenault Quinsenberry. May 14, 1895
In the introductory to the book he states "Nearly all the
original adult male steelers of the State (Kentucky) had seen
service in the Revolutionary War, and especially was this the
case with those from Virginia, very many of whom had been
granted lands in Kentucky by that State on account of their
services in the war. Kentucky was then "the great West" of the
Union --the land of abundance and of promise --
"The Unknown Land, that on the sunset rim
Stretched over distance limitless and dim --
Lay with its spread of plain and vale and hill,
Beyond the eye, mysterious and still."
So when the veteran patriots laid down their arms at the advent
of the peace they had conquered, and returned to their homes
broken in fortune, but rich in hope and courage, their eager
eyes saw the brilliant bow of promise toward the land of the
setting sun, and thither many thousands of them wended their way
with wives and children and lares and panates, to build new
homes and carve outnew fortunes in the forests primeval."

The biggest question are how the Maryland Graves, Greaves is
related to the familes of Virginia and North Carolina and
whether the branches previously assigned to Thomas Graves of VA
are descended from Capt Thomas Graves or from another ancestor
(such as John Graves of Concord, MA)
*********
Francis Graves, Sr. was born about 1630 in Virginia and died
about 1691 (before 5 Aug. 1691). The birth date of Francis is
inferred from the fact that he was still a minor and described
as "orphan of Capt. Thomas Graves decd."
On 28 Dec 1638, Henry Penington received 100 pounds of tobacco
and a cow calf for the use of Francis Graves in full
satisfaction for a parcel of land that Henry Wilson bought that
did belong unto Francis Graves the cow calf and tobacco being
paid by Alice Wilson widow - Northampton Co. Will Book I, p. 140
(15W[2]389 & 1Ames145)
On 28 Nov 1642, a certificate was granted unto Francis Graves,
orphan of Capt. Thomas Graves deceased, for transportation of
Richard Cainhoe, Capt. Tho: Graves, Mrs. Fraunces Jefferd,
William Deaton and Richard Cox - Northampton Co. Will Book 2, p.
116 (15W[2]390, Marshall12 & 2Ames223)
In 1642. From this date until 1672 we have no information about
Francis. According to Mrs Hiden, it is likely from the
associates his family chose that he spent some time in
Gloucester Co., Va. before settling in Essex Co.It is also
probable that he lived in Essex Co. before patenting land there,
and that the 714 acres patented 10 Oct.1672 (S.L.O. 6, p. 436)
"on the south side of the river, part on the branch of Gilson
Creek and part on Hoskins Creek adjoining Mr. Beverley's
corner," represented a choice of location rather than just the
reward for transporting 14 persons."
On 20 Oct 1672, Francis Graves patented 714 acres of land in
Rappa. Co., on S. side sd. Riv., part on branches of Gilson's
Cr. & part in Hodgins Cr; adj. Mr. Beverley, near Button Bridge
(Range); over the new Road &c., for trans. of 15 persons -
Patent Book No. 6, p. 436 (2C&P120)
He married Jane Maguffey (or McGuffy or Maguffy) before 28 Nov.
1678.
"Francis b ca 1630; d. ca Aug. 1691, son of Capt Thomas and
Katherine ? of Northampton Co.; m. by 28 Nov 1678, Jane
(Maguffey) Davenport, mother of John, Jane and Elizabeth
Davenport. She m. (3) John Doughty of Essex Co. Cowherd, pp.
322-3."
The marriage of Francis to Jane was his second (according to
Mrs. Sue Davis). At the time of his marriage to Jane he gave
certain cattle to his step-children, John and Jane Maguffey and
Elizabeth Davenport (Old Rappahannock Records, Deeds and Wills
6, p. 57). The original deed preserved among the loose papers of
Essex Co. and shows Francis Graves's firm signature.

In 1694, after Francis had died and Jane had remarried John
Doughty, this new husband deeded certain property to Jane's
sons, Francis, Richard, and Thomas Graves (Essex Deeds and
Wills 6, Reverse of book, p. 296). Doughty died between 1704,
when he is listed in the Quit Rent Roll (Va. Mag., vol. 33, p.
262), and 1715, when Francis and Thomas Graves (sons of Jane and
Francis) appear on the list (Essex Quit Rent Roll 1715, Archives
Div.,State Library).

Children - Graves, by Jane Maguffey
Francis Graves, Jr., b. 1679, m. Anne Reynolds (?) 1699, d.
1748.
See Will of John Doughty in his record.
Francis Graves, Sr. (7) was born about 1630 in Virginia, and
died about 1691 (before 5 Aug. 1691). The birth date of Francis
is inferred from the fact that he was still a minor and
described as "orphan of Capt. Thomas Graves decd." in 1642.
From this date until 1672 we have no information about Francis.
According to Mrs. Hiden, it is likely from the associates his

Hoskins Creek adjoining Mr. Beverley's corner," represented a
choice of location rather than just the reward for transporting
14 persons.
He married Jane Maguffey (or McGuffy or Maguffy) before 28 Nov.
1678. Her maiden name may have been Davenport, and she may have
first married Mr. Maguffey, secondly Francis Graves, and thirdly
John D. Doughty. The marriage of Francis to Jane was his second
(according to Mrs. Sue Davis). At the time of his marriage to
Jane he gave certain cattle to his step-children, John and Jane
Maguffey and Elizabeth Davenport (Old Rappahannock Records,
Deeds and Wills 6, p. 57). The original deed is preserved among
the loose papers of Essex Co. and shows Francis Graves's firm
signature.
In 1694, after Francis had died and Jane had remarried John
Doughty, this new husband deeded certain property to Jane's
sons, Francis, Richard, and Thomas Graves (Essex Deeds and Wills
6, Reverse of book, p. 296). Doughty died between 1704, when he
is listed in the Quit Rent Roll (Va. Mag., vol. 33, p. 262), and
1715, when Francis and Thomas Graves (sons of Jane and Francis)
appear on the list (Essex Quit Rent Roll 1715, Archives Div.,
Va. State Library).
According to The Diary of Robert Rose, p. 320, Francis Graves,
Jr., who died in 1748, had a nephew Benjamin Graves who had been
overseer, first for the Rev. John Bagge on Thomas Button's
"Range" plantation in Essex Co. in 1726 and earlier, and then
for Parson Rose at the glebe in Essex Co., Va.
It was suggested that Francis was not a son of Capt. Thomas
Graves, but of someone else, and that there was a Frances Graves
who was a daughter of Capt. Thomas Graves. This was thought to
be incorrect, as explained in the Appendix at the end of this
book. However, the preliminary results of the Graves DNA Study
indicate that Francis probably was a son of another Graves
immigrant, and the child of Capt. Thomas Graves was a daughter.
(R-14, R-20, R-506, R-507, R-518)
Descendants of Francis2 Graves are especially needed to confirm
the ancestry and structure of that part of the family. Among
many fragments of the family probably descended from Francis2
Graves are genealogies 889 and 892 of King & Queen and
Gloucester counties, VA. A descendant of 892 and one of 889
have been tested, and both match Francis2, but we don't know how
they are connected (if they are). And while we are discussing
possible descendants of Francis2, James Graves and Mary Copeland
of VA & GA (gen. 150) should be included too.
LARGE BLUE GROUP IN MASTER DNA TABLE
It is apparent that the largest group of participants are
descended from the common ancestor of the large blue group in
the master DNA results table.
This includes John Graves of Concord, MA (gen. 166), Rear Adm.
Thomas Graves of Charlestown, MA (gen. 28), John Greaves of St.
Mary's Co., MD (gen. 247), James Graves who married Mary
Copeland of VA and GA (gen. 150), probably Francis2 Graves
(previously believed to be a son of Capt. Thomas Graves of VA),
and most of the Graves families of Randolph Co., NC.
If we test enough markers, the patriarch of each family will
have a slightly different set of results (a slightly different
haplotype). It may then be possible to match each of these
haplotypes to a branch of an even older family. For instance, we
should be able to tell whether James Graves of VA & GA (gen.
150) was descended from Francis Graves (which I think is most
likely), or from gen. 166, 247, or other family. And then we
should be able to tell the ancestry of Francis Graves (although
that may require much more participation from Graves descendants
in England).
In conclusion, it is very important to the success of this
project that more people participate in the DNA study, that more
families are represented, and that tests for results in this
large blue group be extended to 37 markers.
Otherwise, the likelihood of finding relationships will be very
low. The same reasoning discussed above applies to family
groups other than those in the large blue group to a greater or
lesser extent.
