Gaines, Rome Ga. and Hudson Berry and His Descendants", Loyd E. Berry and Mary R. Riley. Mary Riley, deceased, well known for her research ,was a descendant of Rev. Henry Gaines as well as myself. She states THAT Rev Henry Gaines b. 1737 in Kings and Queens Co., d. 25 Jul 1830 in Pickens Co, S. C. md. Ann George (18 Mar 1735 -ca. 1801, baptized 20 Apr 1735, (Records of Christ Church, Middlesex Co., Va.) She was the dt. of Richard and Elizabeth (Mayo) George and a descendant of Lt. Col. John George (1609-1678) of Isle of Wright Co., Va. and Charles City Co., Va. Ann died in S.C. Rev Henry md. (2) Perhaps Mrs Anne Moore of Edgefield Co., S.C., md (3) Lydia (?).


Obit. in "Pendleton Messinger" issue of 8/11/1830, "Rev Henry Gaines died 25th ult. in his 94th year of age. He was born in King and Queen Co., Va, came to S.C. at the age of 60,resided in Newberry District,then Abbeville Dist. and for twenty years resided in this neighborhood (near Central, S.C.). He was for fifty years a Methodist Minister. He married three times. His first wife was the mother of his thirteen children. She lived to see all of them grown. He maried his last two wives in his old age and outlived both of them. My line is through his son Edmund who married Susanna Broaddus. I live in this area and have visited and made pictures Ann's grave located in Abbeville Co., S.C. Please don't think I'm saying your information is wrong . Rev. Henry Gaines, born Abt. 1731 in Kings & Queen Co. Virginia; died August 11, 1830 in Pickens Co. South Carolina - 12 Mi. Cmty. near Central, SC31. He was the son of James Gaines Sr. and Mary Pendleton. He married Ann George June 5, 1756 in Virginia . Ann George born March 18, 1735 in Middelsex Co. Va. (Caroline Co. Va.) died 1801 in Abbeville Dist. S.C.(Gaines Chapel Grave Yd). She was the daughter of Richard George and Elizabeth Ann Mayo.


Notes for Rev. Henry Gaines: He was a minister of the Methodist Episcopal Church who came from Virginia to Newberry County, South Carolina, then went to Abbeville County then to Pickens County.

"A Compilation, Gaines Family Data", not indexed, found in J. Eric Jonson Public Library, Dallas, TX. His obituary is recorded in "Pendleton Messenger", Aug. 11, 1830. In 1777, the Rev. Henry Gaines bought 206 ac. from his father, James Gaines, on Robinson Riv.; and 115 ac. from John Waugh. He and his wife purchased other land, and sold it in Dec. 1787. In 1788, he was in Caroline Co., VA.


"Henry Gaines, of Pickens County, S. C., in his will (1830) leaves to his daughter, Nancy Dogan, "200 dollars with a deduction of 93 dollars which she received and receipted to my son, Reuben Gaines, being my legacy of my mother's estate." (FTM CD #187, p. 177fn)."


A GAINES book, published by Calvin E. Sutherd, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, 1969 (Indexed and revised, 1972), states that Henry married 1st, Isabella Pedick? and 2nd, Sarah George. It also says that Henry was the son of a William Gaines. Copy at SAR library in Louisville.

"William Taylor and Sarah Bradford - about 1748-1752: William 4 Taylor, b.~1730, Wicomico Parish, Northumberland County, Virginia. (Aaron 3 Taylor & Betty Wilde, Lazarus 2 Taylor & Mary Vesey, and John 1 Taylor & Alice Gascoigne). William, the brother of Lazarus above, married Hannah Bradford's sister Sarah Bradford, sometime between 1748 to 1752. Two children, both born in Prince William, are known: Parmenas, (1753-1827) and Leroy, (1758-1834). This family removed to that part of North Carolina which later became Tennessee. William died between 1760 and 1774 when his widow secondly married Hosea Rose, who moved the boys to Burke County, North Carolina. Both boys went by the last name "Rose" until they served in the Revolutionary War under their birth name "Taylor." Leroy married 1) Susan Sherrill 2) Mary Bradford and lived in Washington County, Tennessee. Leroy had 24 children, 12 by each wife. Parmenas married Betty White and lived in Jefferson County, Tennessee with 11 children."
