"Last "Civil War Era" President's
Boyhood Home Restored in Augusta GA
Oct. 4, 2001--The childhood home of Woodrow Wilson, the last
American president to have clear personal memories of the Civil
War years, and from a Southern perspective at that, has been
restored in Augusta, Georgia.
Wilson was born in 1856 in Staunton, Virginia, the son of a
Presbyterian minister who moved frequently while Woodrow was
growing up. The Rev. Joseph Wilson came to Augusta in 1859 and
the family lived in the house until 1870. It was the longest
they stayed in any one house during the future president's
childhood years.
Many historians believe that Wilson's spending his formative
years in the deep South during the Civil War and the early part
of Reconstruction afterwards, deeply influenced his attitudes
toward blacks and race relations in general. When he became
President he ordered racial segregation in various government
functions that had not been segregated before."
From: http://www.civilwarinteractive.com/wwilsonhse.htm
1919. He suffered a severe stroke and paralysis of the left side
on October 2, 1919. He never fully recovered. Wilson's stroke
left him physically incapacitated but his condition was not made
public.
