John-3 Tutt (son of Richard-2, Richard-1) was born in
Spotsylvania County, was bequeathed 150 acres of land which lay
in King George County and 919 acres in Culpeper County by his
father Richard Tutt whose will was recorded in Spotsylvania
County in the year 1766.
There is entered in Deed Book K, page 273 in Culpeper County a
deed dated December 15, 1 780, in which James Tutt and Ann his
wife who were of Spotsylvania County, conveyed to John Tutt a
brother of the said James four negroes whose names were Lott,
Jinney, Killey and ?attey they being the said John's part of the
estate of Charles Tutt.
The above Charles Tutt was killed or died in the service of his
country in the Revolutionary War and James being the eldest
brother naturally inherited his estate but used his privilege of
dividing it with his brother.
The next record concerning this John Tutt was when he began
giving his land holding to his sons the first being on February
15th, 1799, when he and his wife Mary gave to their son Richard
Johnson Tutt 280 acres of land whereon the said Joh n lives
lying on Mountain Run. (Deed Book U, page 201)
The next one was executed the same day when he and his wife Mary
conveyed to their son James Tutt, Jr. 313 acres of the above
tract of land adjoining John Sanders, Richard Sims and Thomas
Fairfax. Recorded on page 202 of Volume U.
At the December Court 1805 John Tutt and Mary his wife an others
(whose names were not mentioned) brought a suit in Chancery
against Lewis Tutt and Gabriel Tutt. Decreed that a negro named
Willis be sold and the amount to be divided among the
representatives of James Tutt deceased.
His wife Ann must have died between the time when the above suit
was brought and the year 1810 when she did not join her husband
John Tutt in his next conveyance of land to his son Benjamin
Tutt of 152 1/2 acres of a larger tract whereon the said John
lived adjoining John Sanders and Joseph Kilby (Deed Book E, pag
e 56, Culpeper County)
This John Tutt married Mary the daughter of his Uncle James-2
Tutt who removed to that county from King George County and died
in the year 1789. His will was made May 6th, 1812 and probated
the 15th of June of that year in Culpeper County. In it he
mentioned his children as follows: Benjamin, John, Gabriel,
Elizabeth Taliaferro, Nancy Taliaferro, Philip, Richard Johnson
T. and his children Susanna, Henry and James Tutt. Witnessed by
Charles M. Tutt, James Tutt, James Gibson, Thomas Ashley,
Benjamin Hawkins. (Will Book F, page 388) His tax assessment for
the year 1790 was on 969 acres of land which in 1812 he had
reduced to 322 1/4 acres by giving parts of it to his sons. In
the year 1782 he paid on 13 negro slaves as Capt. John Tutt.
