CSA-two cousin generals: R.B. GARNETT and R.S. GARNET.
Brigidier-General Richard Brook GARNETT
Born: November 21, 1817 at Essex County, Virginia, America
Died: July 3, 1863 at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, USA
(killed in action) Father: William Henry GARNETT [1786-1866]
Mother: Anna Maria BROOKE [1787-1854]
twin brother William Henry Garnett, was born on November 21,
1817.
Garnett attended the "Hancock party" in Los Angeles where he
together with General Winfield S. Hancock and Lewis A. Armistead
struggled with the difficult choice of continuing to serve under
the old flag or to resign and serve their confederate states.
General Brooke Garnett was shot from his horse while near the
middle of the brigade within about 25 paces of the stone wall.
[A recreation of Pickett's charge and Garnett's last moments is
included in the motion picture "Gettysburg"]
Richard Garnett's war effects, along with those of his cousin
[General Robert Selden Garnett] are housed today in the Museum
of the Confederacy.
GARNETT, Robert Selden Jr.
[1819-1861]
Born: Dec. 16, 1819 at "Champlain", Essex County, Virginia
Died: July 13, 1861 at Carrick's Ford, on Cheat River
Father: Robert Selden Garnett Sr. [1789-1840]
Mother: Oylmpia Charlotte DeGouges [1796-1856]
aide-de-camp to General Zachary Taylor from 1846 to 1849.
Garnett was appointed adjutant general of the state troops of
Virginia, and allotted the task of organizing this heterogeneous
force into an army. Early in June he was commissioned
brigadier-general and given command of the Confederate troops
operating in northwestern Virginia.
When the Federal attack dislodged the Confederates from Rich
Mountain, Garnett was compelled to abandon Laurel Hill. He
saved his army, outnumbered more than six to one by McClellan's
men, by a most masterly retreat. In the heat of the retreat,
Garnett shouted: "They need a little lesson. They may get away
if they like". These were to be his last words. On July 13,
1861 General Robert Selden Garnett was killed instantly while
directing the conduct of his rear guard after the sharp
engagement at Carrick's Ford, on Cheat River.
Garnett had the distinction of being the first general officer
to be killed in the Civil War. He was a brave and skilful
officer, of whom the South expected much, but who did not have
opportunity to fulfil the promise of his military training.
Joyce Garnett m. to Thomas Andrews, she was dau of Thomas
Garnett. dau m. Richard Gatewood.

Mr. Morris was born in Pennsylvania, November 15, 1811. His
ancestors originated in Denmark. His parents, William and
Priscilla (Springer) Morris, natives of Pennsylvania, reared a
family of ten children, only two of whom are now living: Eliam
S. and Martin Luther. The subject of our sketch was the eldest
son. He grew up on his father's farm, was early inured to hard
work, and his limited education was received in the district
schools.
In 1840 Mr. Morris was married to Miss Susannah Good, who was
born in Missouri and reared in Wisconsin. Her father, Richard
Good, still a resident of Missouri, is now in his ninetieth
year. In the spring of 1851, with their five children, they
started on the long journey across the plains for Oregon, their
wagons being drawn by oxen. The pleasure of this trip was
unmarred by sickness, and on the 25th of September, 1851, after
a most delightful journey, they arrived at North Yam Hill,
within a mile of where they now reside. From Charles Hubbard Mr.
Morris purchased a donation claim, paying for it $500. A log
house had been built on it, and five acres were cleared, the
whole tract comprising 318 acres. Here they have since resided,
engaged in general farming and stock-raising. Mr. and Mrs.
Morris are the parents of the following named children: Sarah
P., widow of Andrew J. Turner; Calvin, who is married and
resides on a farm near his father; Harriet, wife of Fred
Chatfield, died at the age of twenty-six years, leaving three
children; Justin G., who is married and settled near the old
homestead; Charles E., who is married, lives in Goldendale,
Washington; Martin Luther, who is married and settled on a farm;
Joan M., wife of Cass Tuplett, a farmer; Jordan D. is married
and engaged in farming; and William Richard, Morris Good, and
Elizabeth Malvina, all single and at home. Mr. Morris has been a
life long Republican. He has never joined any society, and has
never held any office except in his school district. He and his
good wife are now spending the evening of their useful and
active lives in the home which their industry has provided, and
under the shadow of the vines and trees that have grown up since
they settled here. These trees stretch their friendly branches
over his head and seem to say: "Rest, rest well, old Pioneer,
under our protecting branches. We are old friends, tried and
true."
