William BURDEN

1774 - 27 Aug 1835

ID Number: I71139

  • RESIDENCE: Elbert Co. GA
  • BIRTH: 1774, Virginia
  • DEATH: 27 Aug 1835, Elbert Co. Georgia
  • BURIAL: Holly Springs Baptist Church
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2718]
Father: Archibald E. BURDEN
Mother: Hannah GOAD

Family 1 : Clary SHEPPARD
  1.  Polly Mae BURDEN

Notes

"William Burden, son of Archibald and Hannah Burden, was born in 1774 in Virginia but had relocated to Elbert County, GA by 1799 where he made application for headright land for himself and one dependent. Sometime before 1799 he married Claryca "Clary" Shappard, daughter of John and Anna Shappard.

In 1821 he was in the Elbert County land lottery for soldiers of 1812, and in the 1832 gold lottery. He must have received several hundred acres in Goshen District on the Beaver Dam Creek since the old homestead at Flat Shoals was settled by him.

SOURCE: Much of this information was provided by Sheila Kay Mason Casper of Fairbanks, AK. Other sources include William B. Burden's Bible; Pioneers of Hart County, Georgia; Family Records of Charlotte Johnson Brown and Judy Winn; and a booklet entitled, "The William Burden Family".

Email from Neil White, Sun, 29 Jul 2001: "...both William and Clareyca Burden are buried at Holly Springs Cemetery. William has WB chiseled in his headstone while Clareyca has CB chiseled in her headstone. Clareyca is from Abbeville County, South Carolina..."
