FARRAGUT [p.491] during operations in Mississippi River and the
Battle of Mobile Bay, 5th August, 1864; passage of Port Hudson,
14th March, 1863; passage of Grand Gulf, 19th and 30th March,
1863;
served in European Squadron 1865-1869; Commanded a Division of
North Atlantic Fleet, May-September, 1898, during war with
Spain; Commander-in-Chief, Eastern Squadron, July, 1898, to
threaten coast of Spain and reinforce DEWEY'S Fleet;
Commander-in-Chief United States Asiatic Fleet, 1899-1900, as
the relief of Admiral George DEWEY; Naval Representative to the
Coronation of Edward VII of England, 1902;
m. 29th May, 1873, in San Francisco, California, Elizabeth
Anderson THORNTON, b. 27th May, 1850, at Eutaw, Alabama, dau. of
James Dabney THORNTON, Judge of the Supreme Court of California,
who was b. 18th January, 1823, at “Oak Hill,” Cumberland County,
Virginia, d. 25th September, 1902, in San Francisco, where he
had moved in 1854; from Virginia he went first to Eutaw,
Alabama, where he m. 17th February, 1848, Sarah Frances
THORNTON. Judge James Dabney THORNTON was the son of William
Mynn THORNTON, b. 1773 at “May Fair,” Hanover County, Virginia,
d. 1856, in Cumberland County, and Elizabeth ANDERSON, dau. of
Samuel ANDERSON of Cumberland County, b. 25th June, 1757, at
“Gold Mine,” Hanover County, Virginia, d. 24th February, 1826,
and his wife Ann DABNEY. He was the gd. son of Col. John
THORNTON of Hanover County and Sarah THRUSTON, his wife, b.
1743, at “Landsdowne,” Gloucester County, Virginia. Sarah
Frances THORNTON, b. 31st July, 1825, at Huntsville, Alabama; d.
May, 1904, in San Francisco, California, was the dau. of Judge
Harry Innes THORNTON, b. 3d April, 1797, at “Fall Hill,”
Fredericksburg, Virginia, d. 1867, in San Francisco and his wife
Lucy CRITTENDEN, b. 3d October, 1803, in Woodford County,
Kentucky, d. 25th December, 1885, in San Francisco, m. 1824 in
Kentucky, sister of Gov. John Jordan CRITTENDEN. Judge Harry
Innes THORNTON was the son of Francis THORNTON of “Fall Hill,”
and Sally INNES, and after his mother's death in 1807 was
brought up by his grandfather, Judge Harry INNES of Kentucky. In
1823 he moved to Huntsville, Alabama; he was appointed by John
Quincy ADAMS, Federal District Attorney; elected to the Supreme
Court Bench of Alabama; State Senator in Alabama for three
years; appointed Commissioner of Lands, California, 1849 to
1862; Judge of the Court of Claims, San Francisco.
