"Imigrated to America in 1714. Spilman Papers Appendix History
of John Spilman and Mary Fishb ack. John was one of the German
ministers who settled first at Germanna and later took up la nd
in Fauquier county, Vir, at a place called Germantown. John died
before the Trustees coul d make up leases and they were later
made out to his widow. She was left with a number of sm all
children. In the Spilman papers part 2 the german Spilman's
929.273 Sp448m gives a great er history on the settlement and
the Spilmans. Sir Alexander Spottswood, Govenor of Vir, fou nd
no colonist skilled in mining and reduction of iron ore,
commisioned Christopher Baron Vo n Graffenreid to bring a group
of men having these skills. These people ended up getting stuc k
in England for a winter while they got funds together to come to
America in 1714. Their ar rival caused some consternation with
officials who had no idea they were coming. There wer e no plans
to recieve them. The Governor told the council that 42 men,
women and children fr om Germany and proposed to settle tham
above the falls of Rappahannock River to serve as a ba rrier to
the inhabitants of that part of the country against the
incursion of indians. The s helter they built was a pentagon
very regularly laid out and in the very center is a block ho use
made with 5 sides which answer to the 5 sides of the great
inclosure, there were loophole s through it from which you may
see all the sides of the enclosure. This was a retreat for t he
people in case of indian attack. They made use of the block
house for divine services. T hey go to prayers constantly once a
day for prayers and have 2 sermons on Sunday. The service s were
conducted in German. The group remained at Germanna for about 6
years working the min es and smelting the ore in furnaces which
they built and whose ruins are still standing today . Feeling
that they had then discharged their obligation through their
labors and desired ge tting land in their own right. 2 families
consisting of 29 people moved 10 miles or so furth er northward
to settle on Licking Run at Germantown in what is now Fauquier
County. On Jun e 2, 1724 these family heads appeeared at a court
held for SpotyslvaniaCo, Va to prove thei r right to take up
land in accordance with the royal charter. They made an oath
that they ha d come to Vir in 1714 and requested certificates be
made up granting them to take up to 50 ac res for each family
member. Since all were not naturalized, it was agreed between
them tha t with the patent should be taken in the names of the 3
of them who were; John Fischbach, Jo hn Hoffman and Jacob
Holtzclaw. These 3 were then to make 99 year leases to each of
the othe r parties.
The original spelling of the German name was SPIELMAN which soon
became SPILMAN leavin g the records of these 2 Spilman group so
mixed up that no one has been able to figure out ex actly who is
who except when there are other idntifying characteristics.
There are records that show hw was not the son of Johannes
Spielmanand Maria Gertrude Ho ltzclaw as formerly believed, but
was in fact was the 3rd child of Henrick Spielman and Agne s
Risserodt of the village of Oberschelden. In 1708 he was single
and living with his step-m other in that village. He came to
America in 1714 with the group of German miners. He was s ingle
upon leaving Germany, but may have married while detained in
England though it is mor e likely that he married shortly after
arriving in Vir. He was alive on 2 June 1724 when h e proved his
importance and his right to take up land but did die prior to
1729."
