Notes

"Hello, I am an Ashford descendant (Alva Elgin is my GG grand uncle) and am interested in information on Alva Elgin & Carolyn Fletcher Ashford and families. We still have farms on the Ashford land - Free and Easy and Oak View. There are 2 Ashford cemeteries in the area. Carolyn Fletcher Ashford is buried in one of them. Do you have any other information on Alva Elgin & Carolyn Fletcher Ashford? Such as the source of the notes on Yellow Fever (bolded) below?

I am researching my family tree and wonder if you could send me some more info on some of my ancestors' families.
The dates are missing on this website for Oliver Perry SANDERS http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~harrisonrep/Harrison/d00 39/g0000085.html#I5571.

Clara & Josephine were adopted by Alva Elgin & Carolyn Fletcher Ashford (Josephine Fletcher's sister)" Fred Rowe

KATHERINE BUCKELEY

ABT 1585 - AFT Oct 1629

ID Number: I103322

  • RESIDENCE: England
  • BIRTH: ABT 1585
  • DEATH: AFT Oct 1629, Of Northbourn, Kent, England
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3740]
Father: RICHARD BUCKELEY Knt. of Wales
Mother: MARY de BURGH

Family 1 : EDWIN SANDYS Kt, M.A

Notes

Katherine, 4th wife of Edwin Sandys, had twelve children with Edwin during the twenty years following their marriage. She miscarried in 1620, a boy, and Edwin compassionately describes the agony of Katherine in a letter of September 18, 1620 to John Ferrer, MCFP Box 4 No. 971.

"About midnight, my wife being warned by her pains sent for her midwife, a good woman, and of great name, but with no skill or performance in such a case of danger. The next morning, the child, being a goodly boy, lying cross (ways) in her body, through the extremity of her travail gave sudden spring, and as was conceived (for it never moved after) at that instant died. All Friday and Saturday, my poor wife continued in a painful and most uncomfortable travail, the dead child lying clear across, and no help appearing. Yet for all this they still continued me on with hope. Till on Saturday about 10:00 o'clock at night, the midwife and women came with a lamentable outcry, that now it appeared plainly she was past their help, and therefore left it to me to provide some other means. I then sent round about for other midwives of name (which before I could not be suffered), five we had at length some twenty miles off. Meanwhile all through the night she labored unfruitfully in a continued agony, and in the greatest torment any woman endured, yea, though she died, as all beholders protested. But as she was a spectacle of much inconsolable misery, so was she of incredible fortitude of mind, Christian patience, and trust in God, to the admiration of all: omitting no duty of one leaving the world, and not one impatient or unseemly word escaping from her. At length it pleased God, taking compassion on her, the lamentable state of this family...that on Sunday between four and five in the morning, there arrived a women of skill and courage (the other hearts being daunted) who soon after her coming delivered her of the dead child and laid her in her bed; where she continued a whole day after with short and thick panting, as it were for life's breath; and with little speech, and that almost inaudible."
Katherine was helped by the Ferrers after Edwin's death.
