Mr. John Lucas & wife were walking through the woods just below
their plantation, "Green Meadows", when they came across two
small white marble tombstones with the following inscription:
"Sacred/To the Memory of William McCants/
Who departed this life on the 5th of April 1829/aged 72 years, 3
months and 11 days/ Verse: Unveil thy bosom faithful tomb/ take
this new treasure to thy trust/ and give those sacred relics
room/ to Slumber in the silent dust./"
"Sacred to the memory of/Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell/ Who departed
this life February 23, 1803/ aged twenty three years six months
and 9 days/ Verse: Sleep on dear creature in they dust/ Signs
and tears cannot over take thee/ We can but stay until our turn/
O then O then we will over take thee./"
This was the Old McCants burying ground of Wm McCants and his
step dau Elizabeth Ladson, wife of Hugh Campbell.
These stones were removed to Old Burnt Church in 1953 by Mrs.
Pauline McCants Beckham, nearest of kin, and descendant of Wm.
McCants and Mrs. Elizabeth Campbell, and placed in the McCants
family lot there to preserve them to posterity.
Wm McCants had no children by his 2nd wife Ann Rivers.
Possible Rev War record of this Wm McCants or another son of
James.
