Notes

"A Matriarchal Photograph of her is included in this sketch. Susannah Miller used often to tell her children and grandchildren how she played with the little Indian children before the massacre. One day she was holding a stick for an Indian boy to cut off with his tomahawk, and he cut her fingers. Just then some hostile Delaware Indians came upon them. Her parents hastily wrapping up her hand hid her between the feather and straw beds, and at their first opportunity escaped for their lives. Several families together hid in the mountains and many hardships they suffered. They had hard work to get sufficient food, and were very glad to capture a pig one day. Little Susannah, then about five years old, was kept busy nursing the babies of the company. While eagerly watching the roasting of the pig by a woman whose baby she was caring for, she threw her a bone and said, "there eat that chiild if you are starving." When the cloth was taken from Susannah's hand, where the Indian boy cut it, three of her fingers were grown fast together; but while she carried this reminder of the periods of her childhood till her death, she cared for her large family and did spinning and weaving of flax and wool. A beautiful piece of line, spun and woven by her is a cherished relic in the possession of one of her great-granddaughters. She was a strong woman, and one day hoeing in the field with a man "bushed him".

After Samuel's death, she made her home with her son Stephen Miller. She had gone to visit her son Rufus at Old Forge, and after returning from one of the neighbors where she had been to tea, she complained of a severe pain in her head, which resulted in apoplexy, from which she died a few hours afterwards."
