Ann Crosskeys (Fawson) McCants was mentioned in her father's
will, John Crosskeys, in 1788 and proved in 1791. her daughter,
Frances Ann Fawson and her son James McCants, first born of
Joseph were also mentioned. Ann McCants must have died between
1788 and 1791, and Joseph had a 2nd wife, Rachael.
On Feb 17, 1795 an obit "Died in St. Bartholomew's Parish on
Tuesday 10 inst., Mrs. Rachel McCants wife of Joseph McCants,
Esq., of that place." This Rachel was not the mother of Ann
Sarah McCants who married Archibald Campbell, nor of Col.
William McCants born in 1799.
Family tradition is that Hannah Culliatt mentioned in Jemima
Crosskey's will, was the third wife of Joseph McCants. This is
highly probably as one of Ann Sarah's sons, Robert Campbell,
named one of his sons William Culliatt. This, however, cannot
be verified.
The 1st census of 1790 lists Joseph McCants as of Charleston,
Dist. SC with 5 males of age 16 and up, 2 males under 16, and 3
females, including his wife and 13 slaves.
Recorded in the Mesne conveyance Office, Charleston, SC;
"Thomas Osburn, Esq. to Joseph McCants, Gent. Sheriffs titles
for three tracts of land, Dec 1, 1794. Joseph McCants of the
Dist. of Charleston."
