The Dictionary of Surnames by P Hanks and F Hodges (Oxford
University Press 1988) says that Whiteley is an English
habitation name from any of various places mostly now spelled
Whitley, with a derivation from the old English words hwit
(white) leah (clearing).
No evidence to support kinship of the various Whiteley's in the
notes below, i am posting them to help others and if you can
provide a clue to Wm of Fairfax, Loudoun, Bedford, VA & KY or
Madison/Jackson Cos. AL will be most appreciated. josie

Got a nice letter yesterday (6-3-95) from Doris Estes author of
the Whiteley book. Her book has 16,000 Whiteley's and only one
man that lived in AL! Samuel Whiteley, her ggg-grandfather,
married in White Co. TN about 1817 to Lucy Maynard, a 1/2
Cherokee. extrapolated: They moved from McMinn. TN to Jackson
Co., AL where they homesteaded to be near Lucy's parents and the
Cherokee Reservation. They sold their homestead in 1831 and
arrived in Washington Co. AR in 1832. He had joined his two
brothers, Isaac and Charles Booth Whiteley, both Primitive
Baptist Preachers. The Bible of Samuel listed the names, dates
of birth and marriages and some deaths of his children and there
is not a Sue listed. Samuel died in Newton Co. AR in 1864.
Doris does not think Samuel is related to our Whiteley's. She
did not list for me the names of the children in the Bible so
don't know if our Frank is in there. She is very insistent that
about the spelling of Whiteley (two e's).

I have done a lot of research on the Whitley's in US.Though
e-mails and internet
I have found my line starting with George Whitley in 1576 in
Frodsham, Cheshire, England. My line John Wheatley was born in
England 1628. and came to US in about 1655 They then changed
their name to Whitley. I have no proof of this, but like to find
proof. If you hear of any thing, I would love to know. Please
e-mail me
My Whitley line is on our web site

I know you posted this entry ages ago, but thought I would let
you know what I do. Whitley is a pretty common name in Yorkshire
and Lancashire, moreso Yorkshire, England especially around the
Halifax and Leeds areas. The further south in England you head,
the fewer Whitley's you come across, for instance in Wales,
where I currently live, it is practically unheard of and I am
the only one in the phone book with this name. My family are all
originally from Halifax. My family were from working class mill
workers who all had large families, few members have moved far
from the area. Whiteley is also a common name in the Yorkshire
area. Hope this is of some use."
