About 1348 he returned to Scotland from France and recaptured the Douglas lands from the English. Later he took part in the negotiations for the ransom and release of David II. At the death of his wife's brother in 1374 he received the lands and title of the earl of Mar. Douglas had an illegitimate son by Margaret Stuart, countess of Angus in her own right. Subject: Traylor - Turk lines
I am interested in the Traylor Turk connections from Adair Co. KY Thomas Carter Turk m. Elizabeth F. Traylor whose brother Joseph Alford Traylor m. Mary Ann Turk. Sending you a clipping. hoping you may be able to identify some of the people therein. Peggy

The Herald, Burkesville, KY. 10/9/1903 TURK FAMILY, Reunion 1903 - Ben, Noah, and Al Turk three of Missouri's successful business men are here visiting their sisters, Amanda Allen of Washes Bottom, and Mary Traylor of Becks Store, and shaking hands with old time friends and kin and getting acquainted with many of the new.

On Sun. Sept 27th the round of feast making began for their entertainment by Mrs. Allen inviting her children and grandchildren and kinsmen to help her make merry, and it was done royally as everybody enjoyed themselves to the fullest. On Monday we journeyed on with them to their sister Mary's stopping by the way with the prince of entertainers, K. Turk and his estimable wife, of Little Renox. Staying over night, the next day had an outing to the Sulphur Springs of Big Renox.

Ben, Noah, Al and John Henry Turk, K. Turk, and wife, Mrs. Mary Traylor, Pat and Charlie Traylor, Bob English, Mrs. Hettie Allen and M.M. Philpot, made up the merry party, who spent the day in Jollity and with good cheer distilled of Sulphur water and coffee grounds. Charlie and John Henry proving themselves masters in the art of brewing. And right here let me say, the young lady who succeeds in capturing John Henry will be very fortunate indeed. No use to mention Mr. Traylor for he is already mortgaged property.

This is the 1st visit Mr. Al Turk has made to his native land in 56 years. He sees vast changes in many instances, especially around the Springs and I believe found his name on a tree where he carved it nearly 50 years ago. He with his brothers regaled the crowd with many reminiscence of the pranks and sports of their boyhood days. Their jokes were practical and to the point as they demonstrated when they threw the hired man's "britches" out the upstairs window, so they could beat him to the chestnut trees, where they could stamp the burrs open with the bare heel. No so with the shod boy of the present generation.

After a day of much pleasure the crowd, with the exception of Mr. English pulled out for Charlie Traylor's stopping by at his store where he treated us to a melon feast, and then all weighed to see who gained the most while at the springs. The combined weight of the crowd was 2059 lbs., general average of 187 lbs. And the average age was 60 years. The night was spent with music and talk. I say night for they scarcely retired at all, so much to remember and relate. However, the day came and we ascended the mountain to the home of Mrs. Mary Traylor where we joined in the reunion of her family.
Her three brothers, Ben, Noah and Al Turk, and four sons, Noah, Joe, Pate and Charlie Traylor and daughter Mrs. Henry Slemons with their families, Mrs. Martha Turk, John Henry Turk, Mrs. Hettie Allen and Maggie Philpot and last but not least, Mr. Zib Smith with his camera. We all tried "to look pleasant please" and had our beauties snatched. At 12o'clock sharp we were invited to the dining room. The most celebrated Epicurean could not found fault with Mrs. Traylors table, as it was artistically arranged and bountifully spread with the choicest viands and good things of life, to which the crowd did ample justice, satisfying all creature wants below. Many expressed regret that our old kinsman Perry Allen"Rip-e-toe of Herald fame" could not be with us, and best wishes with kindest regards were extended to him and the good wife in their old age. The day was one of pleasure and will be long remembered as a milestone along the pathway of life and with best wishes for our aged cousins and a Gods speed on their journey, we bid them good bye and all turned our faces homeward.

Vass-Gatewood, Essex Co. VA 1700s Posted by: Mike Marshall, Date: September 13, 2000
There is an Essex County, VA deed dated 17 Feb 1759 from VINCENT VASS and WINNAFRED VASS his wife, of Essex, conveying to HENRY VASS of Essex a tract of 240 acres in Essex. Witnesses were William Brooke Jr., John Brooke, and John Cheney.

This is the same 240 acre tract sold by JOHN VASS and wife Rachel [Pendleton] to VINCENT VASS in a lease and release dated 18/19 Mar 1750/51.

In this latter deed of lease/release, VINCENT VASS was described as of Stratton Major Parish, King and Queen County, VA, and is probably the same VINCENT VASS mentioned in processioning records of Stratton Major Parish dated 22 Jul 1751.

There is a published history of the Meador family of Essex which states that WINIFRED GATEWOOD, daughter of John Gatewood II, married VINCENT VASS by 1761. John Gatewood II was son of John Gatewod I who d. Jan 1707.

"Essex County records show that by 1750, another Vincent Vass was living in Stratton Major parish of King and Queen Co. where he referred to himself as a "planter" indicating he owned land there. This may well have been in the general vicinity of the Pigg-Hall tract. Could it be that some of the debt of Robert Abrahall's estate was taken out in the form of land in King and
Queen, and this ended up in the hands of one of the Vass family members via the Cauthorn connection?

Efforts to identify the connection between Col. Robert Abrahall and Thomas Abrahall, whose relict married Richard Cauthorn in London have been unsuccessful to date. A genealogist who lives in Herefordshire, England did some research for me. She had a copy of the 1659 Visitation of Hereford as well as a manuscript "Mansions and Manors of Herefordshire," by Robinson. She noted that there is mention of a Thomas Cauthorne, however neither text mentions a Nicholas Cauthorn. Moreover, she noted that there is a Thomas, son of John Abrahall of Eaton Tregoz (aged 50 in 1644) and Ann, daughter of Watkin Vaughan of Hargest. There is also an earlier Thomas who appears only in the Robinson pedigree. He was the son of Fulk Abrahall of Michaelchurch who married Joan Gilbert of Orcop, who died a widow in 1588."

The records of St. Andrew, Holborn, London mention the christening of Nycolas Abrill [variant of Abrahall] on 18 Nov 1593, and a Thomas Abrill on 4 Apr 1596. However, more research is needed to sort out the early line of Abrahall.
