ABT 1760 - Aug 1816

ID Number: I87632

  • RESIDENCE: Laurens Co. SC

  1. +John COOK
  2.  Clayton COOK
  3.  Unknown COOK
  4.  Mitchell COOK
  5.  Daniel COOK
  6.  Tobias COOK
  7.  William COOK

Notes

"Spouses 1 Ursula (unknown).
The first record of James Cook that has been found is a report that in June-December, 1780, he marched with Major Patrick Cunningham's Little River Regiment, 96th District. This contingent marched to Orangeburg, South Carolina with Lt. Col. Cruger. Thus, it seems that James Cook was a Loyalist during the Revolutionary War.240 In 1786, James Cook purchased a tract of land from George Anderson in Laurens County, South Carolina.241 James Cook died in Laurens County, South Carolina and left a will dated February 28, 1815 with a codicil dated January, 1816.242 The will mentions wife Ursula, sons John, Mitchall, Daniel, Tobias, William, and Clayton (deceased in 1816 but with a son named James Clayton), and a daughter deceased who had married a Teague and had daughters Emily, Matilda, Elizabeth, and Mary. The connection between this James Cook and the John Cook of Madison County Alabama is strengthened by the fact that all of the aforementioned sons of James Cook were living in Madison County in 1820."

ROBERT de UMFREVILLE Baron of Prudhoe

ABT 1075 - 1145

ID Number: I56173

  • RESIDENCE: SCT
  • BIRTH: ABT 1075
  • DEATH: 1145
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2041]
Father: ROBERT "With The Beard" UMFREVILLE of Eldons

Notes

"Lord of Redesdale and Coquetdale. Robert appears in a pipe roll of 1130 when he was pardoned 40 shillings for danegeld by brief of the King. He appears to have regularly been at the court of King David of Scotland (1124- 1153) which must indicate that he held land IN Scotland. The Normans settled south of the tweed and in Cumbria south of the Solway, both these areas were claimed by the Scottish Kings and much of Cumbria was under the jurisdiction of the Bishop of Glasgow. We also know that Malcolm of Scotland encouraged the settlement of Norman knights south of the Forth and the Umfrevilles may have gained scottish lands as part of this settlement or via marriage2. It would make sense therefore to be on good terms with the King of Scotland. He was alive in 1139 to sign charters of Henry Percy Duke of Northumberland. Robert must be the Umfreville who built Harbottle on the river Coquet and Prudhoe castle."
