  • RESIDENCE: Henrico & Chesterfield Cos. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1676, VA
  • DEATH: 3 May 1743, Chesterfield Co. VA
  • BURIAL: the left bank of the Appomattox River, near its mouth. A double headstone marks their graves. [S1751]
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1118] [S1422] [S1751] [S1615]
Father: (RESEARCH QUERY) MARSHALL of Virginia & MD

Family 1 : Elizabeth WORSHAM
  1. +Francis MARSHALL
  2.  Alexander MARSHALL Jr.
  3. +William MARSHALL Sr.
  4.  Elizabeth MARSHALL
  5.  John MARSHALL

Notes

"Both she and Alexander Marshall died in 1743 Chesterfield Co., VA. The double headstone was still standing in 1955. Elizabeth & Alexander Marshall children: Alexander Marshall md Sarah Moseley; William Marshall md 1st) Ann, 2nd) Phoebe Farmer & 3rd) Lucy Green; Elizabeth Marshall md John Todd; Francis Marshall md Mary Thompson; John Marshall".

"Alexander and Elizabeth made their home at the residence she had shared with her late husband. Two of her daughters by Ligon, Phebe and Elizabeth, received a parcel of land known as "Powell's" from their father's estate. Alexander purchased 86 acres of this tract in 1725 from Phebe and her husband Henry Walthall. In 1733 he bought another 100 acres, which was probably the remainder of "Powell's," from Elizabeth and her husband James Anderson.

On January 7, 1725 Alexander patented 2000 acres of land on the north side of Appomattox river and the south side of Butterwood Creek. This tract was part of the formation of Goochland County in 1728. Alexander patented 3000 acres in Goochland on September 28, 1730. This included the acreage of his former patent".

"In 1738 Alexander Marshall sold six hundred acres to George Williamson who chose not to have the land registered. Alexander died in 1743, leaving his will. When George Williamson died in 1752, the court ordered that his land be surveyed. It was then discovered that Williamson never received forty acres of the land he bought from Marshall. The court determined that William Marshall, Francis Marshall, and John Todd were now enjoying the use of this land, and ordered in 1769 that these three pay 39 pounds to the grandson of George Williamson for the forty acres."

"I am a descendant of Alexander & Elizabeth Worsham "Ligon" Marshall, m. 1705/6 in Henrico Co., VA & their sons: Alexander Marshall II m. Sarah Moseley & Francis Marshall m. Mary Thompson.

I would enjoy exchanging any info on these families."

BEF 1690 - 1738

ID Number: I64695

  • TITLE: Rev.
  • OCCUPATION: Rector of Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co. VA
  • RESIDENCE: SCT & Overwharton Parish, Stafford Co. VA
  • BIRTH: BEF 1690, Scotland
  • DEATH: 1738

Notes

"Brother of Rev. James Scott. The Rev. Mr. Scott had inherited the land from his older brother, the Rev. Alexander Scott, in 1738. It formed a tract of the Manor of Leeds reported in 1774 to have been 3533 acres, granted to Parson Scot by the Lord Propietors, on 10 August 1728 and 10 July 1727. This property later became known as "Gondonsdale", the seat of the Scotts and Peytons. From the former family the surrounding magisterial district (Scott) derives its name. The Rev. Alexander Scott had originally came from Scotland to Virginia and settled in Stafford County, where he was Rector of Overwharton Parish."
