GENEALOGIES OF VIRGINIA FAMILIES From the William and Mary College Quarterly Historical Magazine, Vol. I. Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1982. Page 599-600.
"Edward Carter (Thomas (1)) appears first in the Lancaster records in 1687 in a deed made by his grandfather Dale, and in 1694 was his grandfather's executor.
In 1696 Edward Carter paid tithes for two persons, Thomas Carter, Jr. paid for 4, and John Carter for 1. June 24, 1703, "Edward Carter of ye p'sh of Christ Church in ye county of Lancaster Gent" gave a bond for 500 pounds sterling to his brothers Thomas, Henry, and John Carter guaranteeing title to 300 acres of land left them by their father "Thomas Carter late of this county Gent. dec'd". On the same date the other three gave a similar bond to Edward for a negro named Robin left to him by his grandfather Dale. This deed speaks of their mother, Katharine Carter, as now deceased.
March 2, 1716, Edward Carter of Christ Church Psh gent sold 20 acres of land to John Rhodes, his wife Elizabeth Carter acknowledging the same.
In 1721 he witnessed the will of his brother Peter Carter, and in 1732 the will of brother Henry. He sold at least a hundred acres of land to his brother Thomas Carter, and probably divided the rest between his sons before his death, as when he died in 1743 his estate consisted of only a parcel of books, some clothes, and furniture for one room amounting to 27 pounds. Son Thomas executor."

Ibid., page 607. "Aug. 10, 1719, "Mr. Edward Carter (son of Capt. Thomas Carter, Sr.) had a negro boy, son of a free negro woman, bound to him till he was of age, and besides finding him suitable maintenace in his service he was "to cause him to be taught to read and write."

Frances Cook PEYTON

31 May 1752 - 12 Apr 1828

ID Number: I90556

  • RESIDENCE: Amelia Co. VA
  • BIRTH: 31 May 1752, Clay Hill, Amelia Co. Virginia
  • DEATH: 12 Apr 1828, Clay Hill, Amelia Co. Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: notes [S2719]
Father: JOHN PEYTON Baronet of Isleham

Family 1 : John TABB
  1.  Martha Peyton TABB

Notes

The following is copied word for word. It was written by John Randolph of Roanoke, Va.
"Died at Clayhill, her seat in Amelia County, Virginia, on the 12 th of April 1828 in the 75th year of her age, Mrs. Frances Tabb, relict of the late John Tabb of Clayhill, and daughter of the late Sir John Peyton of Isleham in the county of Glouster, Baronet lineally descended from the Peytons of Isleham in Cambridgeshire, England. By the death of his son John, younger bro. of Mrs. Tabb by a second marriage, this ancient baronetcy became extinct. As he never assumed the title after his father's death, it was claimed and held by persons in England not entitled to it by false allegation. It is also falsely stated in Debrett's Baronetcy that Sir Robert Peyton who emigrated to Virginia during the civil wars in which he was a severe sufferer, left
no heirs male. . . . "
