Gideon SOULE

ABT 1710 - ____

ID Number: I48853

  • RESIDENCE: Duxbury, MA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1710
  • RESOURCES: See: [S1739] [S2056]
Father: Moses SOULE
Mother: Mercy SOUTHWORTH

Notes

Credited with having for wife MERCY SYLVESTER and with two children, but my investigation contradicts this assumption. That was another man of the same name. See Soule of Halifax, Mass. This Gideon was non compos mentis and was long a town charge in Duxbury, Mass. From the records I find that his sister, Mrs. Deborah Hunt, was reimbursed for his board and care several times and at one time he was "sold out" to another family in the town. Some have designated this Gideon as an "insane" person; others as a "crazy man." In Winsor's history of the town several anecdotes are related concerning him. Like many persons deficient mentally, he exhibited remarkable specimens of "mother wit" on some occasions. The local minister, Rev. Samuel Veazie, was frequently visited by this wandering man and permitted him to tarry for the night in the attic. Now Gideon seems to have had some kind of a "call" to preach, probably self-made, and disturbed the family by his loud declamations during the night hours. On coming down one morning his entertainer approached him in a passion and said, "Gideon, I won't have it! You must not disturb me so over my head with your eternal preaching! I cannot sleep a wink all night for your bawling and clatter!" "Preaching, Brother Veazie," retorted Gideon, "you cannot sleep a wink all night for my preaching? Well, I can sleep all day in spite of yours!"

Asa Soule (Gideon Soule, Gideon Soule, Moses Soule, John Soule, GEORGE SOULE).
