Capt. Willoughby NEWTON

ABT 1770 - ____

ID Number: I61372

  • TITLE: Capt.
  • RESIDENCE: Westmoreland Co. VA
  • BIRTH: ABT 1770
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2095] [S2916]

Family 1 : Sally Bland POYTHRESS

Notes

"The Newton Family Old Churches Ministers, and Families of Virginia. Article LX: "From a document of Mr. Willowby Newton, father of the present Willowby, and grandson of a Willowby Newton, I learn that at an early period four brothers emigrated to Virginia,--one of whom settled in Norfolk, another in Alexandria, one in Westmoreland, and one in Stafford; so that it is probable that all of the name in Virginia, and many out of it, are from the same stock. Richard Lee, of Lee Hall, in Westmoreland, not far from the ruins of the old burnt house, which was an ancient Lee establishment, married a Miss Poythress, of Prince George, who was a granddaughter of Richard Bland. After the death of Mr. Lee--commonly called Squire Lee--she married Mr. Willowby Newton, both of whom were vestrymen, as was John Newton, father of this Willowby, and son of the first Willowby. The name of Willowby was an ancient one about Norfolk, and intermarried with the Newtons."

"She had several children by her second husband, among them Willoughby Newton, of Linden, who married Mary, daughter of Judge William Brockenbrough and was the father of Rev. John B. Newton, M. D., now assistant Bishop of Virginia."

Bonum, Samuel, 26 Oct. 1748; 29 Nov. 1748. Uncle and Aunt Thomas and Elizabeth Bennett 2 negroes and 11 sheep; cousins Mary Thomas 1 negro and Joseph Bennett 2 negroes; to Mrs. Sarah Newton 1 negro; to Mrs. Elizabeth Newton 1 negro; to Miss Judith Newton 1 negro; to John Newton 1 negro and cattle; to Capt. Willoughby Newton residue of estate.
