Family 1 : Mary SNOWDEN
Family 2 : Sarah Ann MCCANTS

  2.  Mary Catherine MURPHY
  3.  John MURPHY Jr.
  4.  James Calvin MURPHY
  5.  Janet Lemirah MURPHY
  6.  Agnes Melvinah MURPHY
  7.  Robert Archibald MURPHY

Notes

Mr. Murphy was a noted gunsmith and a mechanic in the useful trade of sharpening saw gins, making running gear for the machines, and also framing and putting up cotton presses introduced in the district.

"John Murphy Book" purchased by John Murphy from Thomas McCants on 2 March 1823 for $3.00 and published in "The Rivers Chronicle" by the Three Rivers Historical Society.

John m. 1st Mary Snowden, dau of Samuel Snowden & Mary.

Children by his 1st wife to Mary Snowden were: John Archibald, Elizabeth(Mary?) Catherine (m. James H. McClary 11 Dec 1850), and Andrew James Murphy (m. Mary Ann S. McGill Dec 13, 1843).

CONFLICT: The children by 1st wife is confusing as the dates of birth of some of these children are after his marriage to Sarah Ann McCants.

His will stated: to my beloved wife Sarah Ann $10.00, she to live on the plantation with my children for her lifetime. The remainder of my money to be equally divided between my children from A. J. Murphy down to R. A. Murphy and Sarah Jane Brown's children to get their mother's share. To James C. Murphy my rifle gun.
If he dies without issue, the gun to be given to my grandson, James L. Brown. When J. L. Brown comes to be large enough to work, Calvin Murphy will learn him a trade. Exec: John Murphy, Jr, James C. Murphy and Robert A. Murphy with their mother Sarah Ann McCants Murphy.
