Mother: Mary Willis "Polly" COBB |
Col. Flournoy moved to Pontotoc, Mississippi and married Louisa
Cullen, Amanda's niece and the daughter of Wiley Wimberly
Cullen. Col. Flournoy became Supt. of Education at Pontotoc. In
1857 he was a member of the Secession Convention in Mississippi.
When the Federal troops came through in 1864 they carried away
all of his slaves and pretty well stripped the countryside.
However he recovered and was regarded as a wealthy man. After
the War he aligned himself with the Carpetbagger faction editing
a sheet called "Equal Rights". During Reconstruction days he was
called the "most extreme and obnoxious radical in the State". So
bitter was the feeling against him that a band of the Ku Klux
Klan paid him a visit. There was some firing but he escaped
unhurt. His testimony may be found in Vol. 1, pp. 82-95 of the
Senate Committee's investigation of the Klan. In 1872 he ran for
Congress on the Republican ticket and was defeated by L. Q. C.
Lamar, who was later appointed to the Supreme Court of the U. S.
In spite of Flournoy's radical views he regained his popularity
in later years. The people respected his honesty and the older
people of Union (formerly part of Pontotoc) County say that he
was a kindly, generous man."
