John MOORE "the Immigrant"

1584 - ____

ID Number: I78924

  • RESIDENCE: ENG and by 1620 Elizabeth City Co. VA
  • BIRTH: 1584, Reading, Berkshire, England
  • DEATH: Elizabeth City Co. Virginia
  • RESOURCES: See: [S3005]

Family 1 : Elizabeth MERRITT
  1. +Augustine MOORE I

Notes

"John is referenced as a Captain. Cathy Judd at Rootsweb / the Terrill Family Forum / 23 March 2001 / makes reference to John and his wife Elizabeth Merritt. She suggests that he may have been from the area of Shropshire England. She suggests that they arrived in Virginia by at least 1620 when there son Augustine Moore was born. That Augustine married Margaret (Mary) Wooley according to Ms. Judd. This assumption would eliminate Augustine and his wife Elizabeth Anne (?) from the instant genealogy.

The John Moore Genealogy (Kenneth Hinds) references John (b. ca 1584) as the son of Robert Moore. That John is referenced as having arrived in Virginia aboard the 'Bona Nova' at age 36 in 1620 under his own muster. His wife Elizabeth is referenced as having arrive aboard the 'Abigail' two years later in 1622. Provisions included: "Corne, 3 barreles; Fish 400 ct, Armes: peeces, 3; powder, 2 lb.; lead, 16 lb.; house, 1; pallizado, 1; and Store, 1." John and Elizabeth are recorded as resident in Elizabeth City, VA. by 1625 by Hotten. Kenneth Hinds also references 'Adventures of Purse and Person in Virginia 1607 - 1624' by Meyer and Dorman. "The Moore family begins with John Moore, who patented 285 acres in Elizabeth City Co., VA. in 1638".

Another researcher (not named by Kenneth Hinds) references that a John Moore patented on 3 July 1635 (not 1638) 200 acres (not 185) in Elizabeth City Co., VA. on the Little Poquoson adjacent to Thomas Boulding and Thomas Garnett, and running south into the woods towards the head of Broad Creek and that Augustine Moore (his son ?) patented 19 June 1676, 285 acres in Elizabeth City Co., VA. at the head of Little Poquoson Creek, 200 acres of which land had been previously granted to John Moore, father of the said Augustine, by patent dated 3 July 1635 and the other 85 acres in Elizabeth City Co., VA. were granted in 1638 to a Joseph Moore (not John Moore). A Rootsweb entry also references John Moore as having been born in Ireland. Another Rootsweb entry also has John born in Reading, Berkshire, England and that his wife's maiden name was Meirrett ( also referenced as being spelled 'Merritt').

A John Moore is referenced as a Grantee with Rowland Burnam on 4 September 1638 in a transaction that involved 200 acres near the head of the Second Creek below the Gulfe on the east side river. (Ref: Land Office Patents No. 1, 1623 - 1643 (v. 1 & 2), p. 596 (Reel 1)). A John Moore is referenced as having land that adjoined the land of Thomas Vicount - grantee on 13 July 1635 in Elizabeth City County, Virginia. Also haveing adjoining land was John Garnett & c. The land of Thomas Vicount included 100 acres. This is referenced at (Ref: Land Office Patents No. 1, 1623 - 1643 (v. 1 & 2), p. 226 (Reel 1))."
