Richard surveyed the western shore of Maryland, and helped lay
out the town of Baltimore in 1736. He was a Justice and
Commisioner of Baltimore County from 1727 until his death. He
appears in numerous court records of Baltimore Co. Richard was
the child of members of the Church of England, but his marriage
is recorded in the Quaker Friend's Records.
Richard Gist's marriage consent from 1704 states "The young man
produced a certificate (of consent) from Thomas Cromwell, his
uncle and guardian signifying his and his wife's consent and the
young woman's mother." Who exactly this Thomas Cromwell is is
uncertain. Some of the witnesses to the wedding were as follows:
Je. Murray, Rich. Cromwell, Keia Murray, Eliza Cromwell, Will.
Cromwell, Tho. Cromwell, Mary Cromwell, John Ashman and others.
