The following photos and information details the ten captured
Confederate flags still held by the State of Illinois. The flags
in the collection are of two types -- First National Flags and
Battle Flags.

Barlow's Battery Flag
Description
This side is inscribed "32 SHOTS. IN. GUNBOAT. GENL. BRAGG. JUNE
15. 1864. BARLOW'S BATTERY". According the the Illinois Adjutant
General's records the flag was captured together with two pieces
of artillery, at Brookhaven, Mississipppi by the 2nd Cavalry
Brigade, Col. J. G. Fonda commanding, August 18, 1864. The red
cotton flag measures 51 x 37". The Southern cross is blue with
13 stars. The inscription is sewn separately onto flag using
white silk block letters. The flag has a sleeve 2 1/2" wide and
red silk ties on the upper point of the sleeve.
Barlow's Battery Flag, Side 2 This side of the flag is inscribed
TRUST IN GOD.
Description
Report of Brigadier-General Albert L. Lee, Commander Cavalry
Division, Department of Gulf; 22 November 1864: at Brookhaven,
Mississippi on 18 November 1864: "At 5 p.m., 17th Colonel Fonda,
with 500 men of the Second Brigade, moved on Brookhaven,
distance forty-six miles. At daylight on 18th he surprised the
town, scattering a small infantry force stationed there and
capturing a section of artillery, with caisson. The gunners were
many of them shot down at their pieces. He captured about 50
prisoner;..." O.R., Series I, Volume 49, Part 1, pp. 2-3.
Barlow's Battery was Barlow's Louisiana Batttery commanded by
Capt. William P. Barlow.
