Notes

The headstone erected a few years ago by the Sons of Confederate Veterans lists the five soldiers buried in the one grave: James Angel, Temple Garrett, John W. Garrett, John Riggins and Lafe Rice.

According to the narrative on the monument:
"The five men listed and a Mr. Price, age 65 or 70, all Confederate soldiers, while returning to their company, stopped to rest and water their horses at the mouth of Richland Creek in Searcy County. Jayhawking Union soldiers ambushed them from the bluff, shooting in the back six of the group of eight. Two sons of James Angel escaped and brought word to the families.

KATHERINE MYLDE

____ - ____

ID Number: I67961

  • RESIDENCE: England
  • BIRTH: Clare, Suffolk, England
  • BURIAL: The Church of St. Mary the Virgin
  • RESOURCES: See: [S2579]
Father: WILLIAM MYLDE

Family 1 : THOMAS (de Cloptone) CLOPTON Knt.
  1. +WILLIAM CLOPTON Knight of Long Melford
Family 2 : WILLIAM de TENDRING

Notes

"Katherine is buried before the altar in the South Chapel of the Church of St. Mary the Virgin.
Through her second marriage to William de Tendring she became the distant grandmother of three queens of England, two of the unfortunate wives of Henry the VIII, Ann Boleyn and Catherine Howard, and Queen Elizabeth I. Their memorial brasses in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin are among the finest in England. The Clopton Arms: ermine spot on the bend in base may be seen on the mantle of the depiction of Dame Katherine. The descendants of William Clopton and his wife, Ann Booth, are direct descendants of Guillaume Pecche and Alfwen his wife, by both the Clopton-Mylde marriage and the Mylde de Tendring marriage."

"Martha Purl has an extensive story on the Purl family, starting as slaves and being set free by civil war. Martha Purl was a wedding gift from William E. Williams to their daughter Elizabeth Williams when she married Valentine Moulder. Martha is described as a mulatto. She generally lived with two of the Moulder daughters one had married a Green one a Warren. She was always considered a negro by neighbors who always admired her as a fine woman. In about l886 Martha married Austen Purl. Austen Purl had been married earlier to Nellie Brinker.

This information may be of marginal interest to you; Austin Purl was b abt 1850 The son of slaves belonging to Ambrose Purl (white) a farmer living in Osage Township of Camden Co. MO. Ambrose Purls personal property consisted of this family of 8 slaves value $6,830.
Osase Township Camden Co. is in north part of Camden Co. almost sure to have been on Osage River . This would have been near your Purl family of Morgan Co.

This information comes from Camden Co. Historian a publication of l992 of Camden Co Historical Soceity. My family was also well acquainted with Martha Purl. One other item Austen Purl had worked for one my ancestors after Civil War (Wm Crain) This is a lengthy article on descendants of Camden Co. slaves after Civil War.

Thus we have as quite common two families one white and one their colored slaves. While this story is almost exclusively about blacks, Ambrose Purl (white of Osage Township) is mentioned briefly. Hope I have made this message understandable." Hoyt Young

Also in my search of PURL I have ran into the surnames:
PEARL, PEARLE, PERLE, PURLL (Canda) , PURLLE, PERILL, PERREL or PIRL. I have heard that there was a rift in our family and one branch might have changed their name, but to what is unknown to me.
Also there are Purls in England, India and Germany. In German the name Purl means Pisch or Pischet which is very interestering.
Let me hear from you again. You have the most Purls listed I've ever ran arcross in all my 40 years of research other than the late Mrs. Joe (Bessie) Purl of Magnolia, MS and Ms Mae VanHorn of Christoval, TX. Great to know we're not extict, however, our Purl family only has two Purl male surviving, one is my brother Roger Paul Martin Purl who is living in Oregon (my 3 other brothers have died) and one nephew, Ladd Franklin Purl, Jr. of Hearne, Texas. However, one of my nieces has kept her maiden name, Sue Ann Purl of Clinton, AR.
