Mother: Mary COOK |
John C. and Eleanor moved to Richland Valley, Searcy Co., AR in
1851. At the same time Eleanor's mother, Mary, and her
children, Hugh C., Vincent R., Aquilla, Perilla, Richard and
George, also moved to Searcy Co., AR. This would mean that John
D. had died after the 1850 census and before the time of the
move. During this same time frame, four other of John D. and
Mary's children also moved to Searcy County. They were; Delilah
REDDELL VICK, Nancy M. REDDELL RACKLEY, Sarah M. REDDELL
SULLIVAN and Permilla N. REDDELL KYLE. Charlotte REDDELL
ROBERTSON and Elizabeth REDDELL YOUNG were already living in
Arkansas and were from all indications some of the earliest
white settlers in that part of the state.
Eleanor and John C. settled near her mother on the north bank of
Dry Creek in township 15 North, 18 West, just before it joins
Richland Creek. It was here their last child, Sarah Elizabeth,
was born on 6 Nov 1852, probably shortly after her father left
for the California gold fields sometime in 1852. He is reported
to have died in San Francisco of disease about 1854.
About 1854 Eleanor, who had been raised a Methodist, was
baptized into the Baptist Church by an energetic itinerant
preacher, Jesse Griffin, who lived about twenty miles away in
Wiley's Cove. She remained a Baptist for the rest of her life
and was remembered by family and friends for her devoted
Christian life.
When the Civil War began, Eleanor and her children were living
with her mother, Mary, and brothers, Richard and George. Her
sisters, Delilah VICK, Sarah M. SULLIVAN and Perilla ETHRIDGE,
lived within a few houses on each side. Arkansas seceded in May
1861, and in July, James Harrison LOVE raised Company K, 14th
Arkansas Infantry for Confederate service from the men on
Richland Creek and the surrounding area. They were sworn in 5
August 1861 in Yellville. Not all went willingly; one man later
stated he "could have gone with Company K, 14th Arkansas, or
looked up a limb to be hanged from." At least three of
Eleanor's brothers, Aquilla, George and Vincent R. and
brother-in-law, Benjamin J. VICK, went with Captain LOVE'S
company east of the Mississippi. Two REDDELL boys deserted at
the end of their year's enlistment, another and Benjamin VICK
were discharged within a year of enlistment. In December 1861,
brother-in-law, John B. SULLIVEN participated in the round up of
Searcy County peace society members, then signed a petition for
their release. Vincent R. REDDELL again served with Captain
Harry LOVE in Company C, 7th Arkansas Cavalry, a guerrilla unit,
and served briefly -- probably under duress -- with the Union
Army (Company F. 1st Arkansas Infantry) from March to August,
1863.
Richland Valley was considered the breadbasket of Searcy County
and suffered from foraging parties from both sides during the
war. At least three major Civil War military skirmishes took
place on Richland Creek and the women folk from the
REDDELL-SULLIVAN households helped bury the dead. James
Anderson SULLIVAN, Eleanor's son, was about sixteen years of age
during these raids and skirmishes. Presumably he hid in the
hills to avoid capture and death by both sides.
Eleanor's mother, Mary, widow of John D. REDDELL, died either
during the Civil War or immediately thereafter, as her heirs
appear in January 1867 to settle her estate with the sale of
twenty-nine plus acres on Dry Creek to brother Richard REDDELL.
Lucy Malinda, Eleanor's oldest child, married James W. Cole,
probably during the last months of the War. They had two
children. After James's death she married Cephas Augustus Parks
HORN and had seven children by him; all of whom died in infancy.
C.A.P. HORN died 5 Jan 1902. On 26 Aug 1908, Lucy M. married
Francis M. HUDSON. She died in Leslie, AR on 19 Aug 1919.
James Anderson SULLIVAN married a Dickey in Newton Co., AR. He
is believed to have died in October 1879. Nothing further is
known of him.
Mary Parilla married D. H. MORRIS, but nothing further is known
of her.
Sarah Elizabeth was born 6 Nov 1852 in Searcy Co., AR. She
married Adam Perry TREECE at Wiley's Cove, AR 5 Nov 1875. They
lived in Bear Creek Township, Searcy Co., AR in 1880 where Adam
worked as a farm laborer. They later moved to Marshall, the
county seat, and Adam was appointed deputy sheriff in charge of
the jail. Sarah Elizabeth kept boarders. Her mother, Eleanor,
moved in with them and helped. In 1904 they homesteaded 160
acres in Barren Hollow, Searcy Co., AR. When they had proved up
the claim, they sold the land and moved to Leslie, AR where Adam
worked in the lumbering business and Sarah E. continued to keep
boarders. They had eight children. Nellie and Brewster both
died young. Lillie D., who married Green Berry GREENHAW, Jr.;
William Charles, who never married; James Sherman, who married
Hattie R. WATTS, was an oil distributor in Batesville and
Fayetteville, AR; Hugh G., who married Alda S. SMITH, was Searcy
County Sheriff and Judge, banker and insurance agent; Rose Emma,
financial clerk, Federal Reserve Bank, Little Rock, AR, never
married; Abe Waterson, deputy sheriff, businessman and US Corp
of Engineers guard, married Em fly A. CARMICHAEL.
Eleanor REDDELL SULLIVAN died in Marshall, AR in May 1894. (For
further information on her descendants see the following group
sheets.)
(The editor is grateful to James J. JOHNSTON of
Fayetteville, AR for much of the information on Eleanor.)"
