His wife had inherited the slaves. He was referred to as Captain
John. Tuscaloosa Co. records of his estate had his son, John H.
Neilson as administrator. He left $230.93 each to his wife,
Maria, and his sons John H., George D. and Robert.
His obituary reads" Died at his residence,in this neighborhood,
yesterday morning, Capt. John Neilson, aged about 70 years,
formerly of Augusta, Ga. Funeral today at 11 o'clock at the
Presbyterian Church." His tombstone has the masonic emblem on
the top; therefore, he must have been a mason.
From Vol 13, p67 Alabama records-5-31-1831-"John Neilson of
Richmond Co, Ga. to Dennis Dent in trust for my wife, Negroes
that were left to my wife, Maria Neilson and her children, by
the last will and testament of her grandmother, Elizabeth Truman
of Columbia County, Ga."
His partnership with his brother in law, John Camapbell, was
disolved in May 1807.He immediately began another dry goods and
grocery business with his brother, Samuel Neilson, This
continued until May, 1815. He auctioned off his stock of goods
in another enterprise on 2 February, 1813. He later purchased
his brothers Tanyard in January, 1817. He and his brother
foreclosed 120 acres in July 1818. He sold 2 lots comprising 6
acres in May, 1819. He and Thomas H. Fendall (his brother-in-law
on his wife's side) were foreclosed on for 5 acres in July,
1823. He placed an add in the paper on August 18, 1830 to sell
his plantation and negroes.
He was Captain of the Augusta Rangers in 1806. The History of
Augusta says that there was a "breeze of war "in Augusta in 1806
as a result of the British vessel Leopard firing upon The
Chesapeake, an American ship,. It says," Captian John Neilson of
the Augusta Rangers and Captain George W. Evans, of the Augusta
Independent Blues, tendered their services to the President, who
responded in a handsome letter of thanks ."
1790 Census has a John Neilson living in Penn. Page 327 of York
County, Pa. Chanceford district enumeration. He is listed as
head of household with one free white male over 16 years in the
household, 2 free white males under 16 years of age, and four
free white females.
Beneath his name in the census is Wm Neilson. Living with him
are 3 free white males over 16, no males under 16, and one free
white female, and three other persons.
These names may be uncles of John Neilson as he would only be 19
and his brother William would only be 13 in 1790. However I
strongly believe that he was living in Philadelphia in 1790
because of family notes."
