Kept farm diaries throughout his life at Kinloch, The Plains,
Virginia. Mentions Nathan Loughborough several times in the
diaries kept during the Civil War.
The following is quoted from his epitaph:
"Though born to wealth and social position of the highest, and
graced with education, polished manners and fine sense, his
sober wish never strayed after the vulgar ambition for place and
the hot incense of human applause; but, preferring the
sequestered pease and sancity of his home, he signally
illustrated the dignity of systematic industry, economy and
intelligent thrift as a successful farmer, and all the domestic
virtues of a model man, citizen, neighbor, husband, father, and
friend."
