In the 1850 St. Landry Parish, LA census, Nelson was listed as
67 years old, living next to his son Giles, his property was
valued at $200 and he was from VA, non occupation, his son Giles
was a Planter, Giles' property was valued at $800 and he was 41
years old.
There is still (1996) a community in St. Landry Parish, (now
Acadia Parish) LA known as Higginbotham named for members of
this family.
On his daughter, Mary Ann Higginbotham, Baptismal Certificate,
Church of St. Charles, Grand Coteau V 1 p 116, her parents names
are shown as Nelson Eckerborn Higginbotham and Judith Ware.
Nelson & Judith moved to southern Louisiana from GA and settled
in the area now represented by the parishes of Acadia,
Lafayette, and St. Landry. The majority of the "clan" settled
in an area five miles south of Church Point and 20 Miles north
of Lafayette which is known today as "Higginbotham" as indicated
by recently erected highway signs. Many of the descendants
still live in this area, and many of the old Higginbotham homes
still stand as a tribute to the pioneer spirit of their
builders.

A marker at Jamestown, Virginia, lists the names of the
Burgesses who represented the different areas of the Jamestown
Colony at the first General Assembly of Virginia. Among them was
Samuel Jordan who was one of two representatives from Charles
City, an area that included Samuel's plantation, Jordan's
Journey. This was the beginning of representative government in
the English Colonies of North America.
