He served as Ensign and Lieutenant in Major George Slaughter's 8th VA Regt. commanded by Col. Abraham Bowman in the Rev War. The company was designated at various times as Capt. George Slaughter's Co. and as Lieut. John Graves Co. He was comissioned Jan 26, 1776 and resigned 22 Apr 1778. He was in battles of Brandywine, Germantown, Monmouth and Yorktown. He was a trusted officer of Gen. Nathaniel Greene in NC and detailed by him to oppose the passage of part of Cornwallis's force across the Yadkin which he did with conspicuous and distinguished gallantry.


After the war he removed to Wilkes Co. GA and in 1786 was Colonel commanding a Georgia regiment against the Creek Indians.


DAR No. 74 709. pg. 1, " Another Revolutionary Soldier Gone! Died at his residence in Washington, Wilkes Co. on the 24th ult. in his 77th year, Col. John GRAVES. He was born in Culpepper Co., VA. Entered the army 1776 as a lieutenant in the 8th Virginia Regiment; at the close of the war he was a Major. He was in the battles of Brandywind, Germantown, Monmouth and at the siege of York. When GENERAL GREENE crossed the Yadkin River he was in charge of 200 men to protect passaage of the troups; they had engagement with CORNWALLIS in doing so, but succeeded in protecting the troups and themselves, crossing the Yadkin with a loss of only 3 killed and 5 wounded. Moved to Georgia 1784. In 1786 he commanded a regiment against the Creeks. The Treaty of Shoulderbone followed, to which he was a witness. He was elected by the legistlature as a Presidential Elector in the last election." THE SOUTHERN RECORDER, 1823-1844.
