Mother: Elizabeth ESKRIDGE of "Sandy Point" |
DATE: 16 April 1861 PARTIES: E. J. DILLARD and George WEST
SOURCE: Pittsylvania County Courthouse, Chatham VA, Deed Book
60, p84
COMMENTS: Dillard grants to West 77 acres of land along Beech
Tree Creek, to be held in trust to secure a debt of $75 to
Patrick Dillon STEPTOE. Patrick Dillon Steptoe was the son of
Dr. William Steptoe and wife Mary Dillon, of Lynchburg, and the
grandson of James Steptoe Sr. and wife Frances Calloway.
DATE: 22 Aug 1861, PARTIES: Patrick D. STEPTOE of the first
part; Sterling J. MONROE of the second part; Lucy C. STEPTOE of
the third part
DOCUMENT TYPE: Deed of Trust
SOURCE: Pittsylvania County Courthouse, Chatham VA, Deed Book
60, p150
SLAVES NAMED IN DOCUMENT: Robin, Mary and her children Amanda &
Elizabeth David & lame Mary
COMMENTS: In this deed, Steptoe conveys slaves and land in
trust to Monroe, to be held "for the sole & separate use and
benefit of the aforesaid Lucy C. Steptoe in the same manner as
tho she were an unmarried woman." Deed further specifies that
land may be sold and money reinvested in other land. By this
deed, Steptoe evidently arranged for the management of his
affairs and the support of his wife while he was at war.
DATE: 26 May 1862 PARTIES: Patrick Dillon STEPTOE and heirs
(dgtr Lucy Anna and wife Lucy CLEMENT)
DOCUMENT TYPE: Will
SOURCE: Pittsylvania County Courthouse, Chatham VA, Will Book
2, p410
SLAVES NAMED IN DOCUMENT: none named. Steptoe names his brother
William administrator of estate and writes, "My Negroes I wish
him to hire out and always get for them good homes & when sick
secure for them good medical attention & the hire of the Negroes
I wish him to dispose of as he may think best for the child
[Lucy Anna]. In the event my Administrator thinks best to sell
one or more of my Negroes from any cause then I give him the
right to do so."
COMMENTS: an interesting document, full of attitude about both
the War and his in-laws, the Clement family: "I want under no
circumstances a single Dollar of my Estate to go back to my
wife's family beyond her bodily heirs."
