James was living next door to his father at time of this census.
James and Viranda moved to IL about 1835-37. There was a James
E. Coghill family in Clay County, Illinois in 1840 that the
author (Troy Lee Griffin) is about 90% sure was this family.
This James is in both the Illinois 1840 State census and in the
Federal census. The State 1840 Clay County, IL census lists them
as follows: Matches to known family members:
Coghill, James E. age 30-40
two males under 5Zacharach age 3 and Jesse age 1 two males
5-10John W. age 7 and James M.
one female 5-10No match
one female 30-40Virinda age 30
If this is the correct James Coghill, he and Virinda must have
lost a daughter before 1850 . Their oldest son, John W. Coghill,
was born three years after their marriage so it is very possible
that they lost their firstborn.
The 1840 Federal census for Clay County, IL agrees with the
state census except that in addition to the above, there was
possibly a 20-30 year old female. The census mark for that
person is fainter than the others but it is not real faint.
James and Viranda moved to Adair Co., MO about 1843-46. They
were living next door to John Adams and Nancy in 1850 and
further away (but in the same township) in 1860.

Elizabeth Wilhot, the wife of John Spicer. Her grandfather was

1819-1840" on page 9.
